Been working in the conservatory studio space during this heatwave, and I’ve managed to keep the temperature pretty stable with 7 small fans pointing around strategically, white concertina shades on the windows, and sun sails hung across the ceiling. But I’ve been wanting to try more from Maimeri so I treated myself to a little primaries set. I really like their watercolour paints, so I’m looking forward to trying these. Must guzzle another pint of water first. 🥵😅

Your gentle reminder that any level of art and craft supply can be a low-pressure, fun, and useful part of your art making. I use a lot of Crayola UK along with other inexpensive art materials, and they all sit side-by-side with the expensive stuff. You don’t need that expensive stuff to learn new things, explore ideas, or have fun. As long as you set your expectations realistically for the material limitations, you can do so, so much. Also, those limitations teach you how to problem solve and that’s a huge part of creativity.
👉You have your homework for the weekend: gather some super basic things you would often avoid because they felt “not good enough” for art, and make something with them. And I highly recommend getting a big box of crayons, if you haven’t touched them for drawing in years; I can’t imagine my studio without them. Two of the studies you see here are made with crayons. I’d have you guess which ones, but the crayons are right there above the paper. 😂

Buckle up, this might be the most love-letter-like post about corn nuts you’ll ever read today. Yeah, I might’ve just obsessively painted one of my favourite snack foods for maybe four hours of texture layering using LUKAS Color Official | Art Supplies Cryl paints, various acrylic markers (some custom filled with Daler-Rowney acrylic inks), and thoughts written (mostly) in Chinagraph. A3 paper.
I know a lot of people don’t give corn nuts a chance, but if you think of them as the same stuff taco shells and tortilla chips are made of, I think it makes sense to give them a go. They’re kinda like that, but in kibble format for dangerously easy snacking. Plain but salted is always a good bet.
So - weirdly, perhaps - I have had the basic wording idea for this for a month or more. I had sort of forgotten it until my restock of mail order snacks arrived today. I bought a couple kilos of these addictive little f*ckers. Hadn’t had them in years until maybe six months ago when I spotted them on a natural whole foods site. Now I’m hashtag obsessed like it’s 1995 all over again.
I love making art that causes me to say to myself, “well, I did not think painting far greater than life-size corn nuts in a perspective angle so sharp it could be in a Beastie Boys video was where I was going today, but here I am…”

Having some fun movie time in my studio after reworking my art desk filming rig for the millionth time. I have joked to friends that I rearrange my gear like I’m playing with LEGO - endless combo possibilities, always finding a better build… Pete actually said, “Cool. Looks good. Looking forward to the next set-up in two weeks.” 🙈
I’ll share more soon, before it changes…😅
Not shown: teleprompter, two additional cams, and more. And sadly, no LEGO. I loved that stuff in the 70s/80s. Truly, those little bricks helped me become the artist I am today. There’s more to that story, but for another time.

Just some juicy red watercolour on my palette right now. (Alizarin Crimson with some Burnt Sienna.)
I am never not grateful that this is what I do for a living. It’s the hardest but best job ever (for me, anyway).
I knew the art life was what I wanted by the time I was about 5 years old. I even chickened out and tried to not be an artist (as my focus/career) for awhile, worked “creative” and “not-at-all creative” jobs that I hoped would scratch the itch, but no. I took the plunge as a full-time artist after moving to Cornwall 16 (SIXTEEN!?!) years ago, and haven’t looked back.
Is it hard? Yes. Am I broke sometimes? Yes. But would I again try to ignore what 5 year old Jennifer knew back in the 70s? Not a chance.
Make your thing happen. Don’t die wondering.
Tell me your dream job, if you’d like. I’d love to know. 🥰
