The Budehaven Book Award 2022

For the first time at Budehaven we got our students to choose the books which would become the shortlist for our 2022 Book Award, the chosen books were:
The Shark Caller by Zillah Bethell
Radio Silence by Alice Oseman
A Darkness of Dragons by S.A. Patrick
Cogheart by Peter Bunzl
When Fishes Flew by Michael Morpurgo
A Pinch of Magic by Michelle Harrison
The Last Bear by Hannah Gold
The Boy Who Made Everyone Laugh by Helen Rutter
The Life and Times of Lonny Quicke by Kirsty Applebaum

Students in year 8 (and one in year 7) formed our first Budehaven Book Award Club where they read and discussed the books once a fortnight. Based on their reviews and scoring of the books we have been able to choose a winner as well as a second and third place.
Congratulations to the following books.
1st Place: A Darkness of Dragons
2nd Place: The Shark Caller
3rd Place: The Last Bear

Our year Seven Reading Ambassadors have been suggesting new books for the Library and here are some of our students with our latest selection. We were very fortunate to receive a grant from the Blanchminster trust.
Without this we really wouldn’t have been able to get all the books the students have selected.
I know these books won’t be on our shelves for long as books that our students choose are always really popular.

18 in our 21 for 21 Book Reviews

Title: Mortal Engines
Author: Philip Reeve
Genre: Dystopian
Date of release: 2001
Description: This futuristic take on our world is really out there. London is a moving traction city eating up other smaller towns and cities. I love the way that the everyday items we have become artefacts to hold up and admire because people have no belongings of their own. The story is face paced, which I like, the journey which the main characters take happen simultaneously, which means that the ending is a real cliff hanger.

Positives: I felt completely immersed in another world.
Negatives: characters that I wanted to know more about, and would hopefully develop in further books in the series were killed off, won’t say which as this would be a major spoiler!
Score: 8/10

17 in our 21 for 21 Book Reviews:
Title: Murder most Unladylike
Author: Robin Stevens
Genre: Dystopian
Date of Release: 2014
Description: This is the first in the series from Robin Stevens where we meet Daisy and Hazel, members of the detective agency at DeepDean School. Hazel discovers the body of one of the Mistresses at the school, only to return to the scene five minutes later to find the body has vanished. The mystery begins.
Positives: Fans of Enid Blyton will love the style of this book, you enter into the world of Private schools and a place where it feels that time has stood still. This isn’t the most serious of murder mysteries and not very graphic however there are lots of twists and turns before we discover, along with the girls, what has been happening at the school. Definitely made we want to read the next in the series.
Negatives: some of the story lines didn’t go anywhere, but I’m expecting them to develop as the books continue.
Score: 7/10

Title: The Haunting of Aveline Jones
Author: Phil Hickes
Genre: Horror
Date of release: 2020
Description: Aveline loves reading ghost stories, so during a half term, when she stays with her aunt, Aveline finds a really interesting ghost book in the local book shop. The last story is crossed out, who would do this and why?
Positives Lots of mystery in this story, kept me guessing all the way through, the whole story is tinged with a creepiness which held me on the edge of my seat.
Negatives: You have to wait to get the next book to see what other adventures there are for Aveline.
Score 8/10
