A big thank you to the students in this film!
We are delighted to report that Laura Smith, part of the Chartwells Independent team manning the kitchen at Akeley Wood, has come FIFTH in the nationwide Apprenticeship Chef of the Year Award. She beat hundreds to the semi-finals with her Jubilee inspired menu of spam fritter croquettes, 12-hr slow cooked spiced lamb and elderflower jelly.
She was then invited to cook a blind-menu challenge for a discerning panel of four top chef-judges, including Dipna Anand, and was awarded an incredible fifth place. We always knew the nutrition and culinary enjoyment of our staff and students at Akeley was was in safe hands, and here's the proof! Huge congratulations to Laura, and thanks to the whole kitchen team for bringing us consistently great food.
Before Half Term, our Year 6 students travelled to Dorset for their residential trip with Land & Wave Ltd. You can read a brilliant run down of the trip by Izzy in Year 6 by clicking here: https://www.akeleywoodschool.co.uk/year-6-residential-trip-to-land-and-wave/
10 Junior School students have qualified for the national Finals in Manchester in June - Levi in the 800m, Finn in the Long Jump, Thomas in the 600m and Zack in the Throw. These four all won their events. The Year 4 girls' relay team of Iris, Hattie, Kezia and Leni, and the Year 6 boys' relay team of Finn, Sam, Harry and Levi also qualified. Akeley Junior won the year 4 girls' and year 6 boys' competitions overall at the event.
In the Senior School, highlights included – year 7 girls as overall team winners, and Year 7, Year 8 and 9 and Year 10 girls' relay teams all smashing their opponents and taking victory in great style. We had many other winners - all who have qualified for the National event in Manchester on Monday 13th June.
Hugely well done to all students who gave it their all and demonstrated determination, composure, bravery, and exceptional sporting prowess! !

Outstanding swimming by all three and huge credit to Izzie and Beth for looking out for their fellow Akeley competitor!
Akeley Wood School & Nursery offers an exceptional educational experience for children from 1-18
Akeley Wood is a happy and caring school with an unpretentious approach. There is a strong emphasis on good manners, a friendly discipline, and looking after others. Naturally we strive for high academic standards, and the results achieved in public examinations are impressive. However, we are also concerned with education in its broader sense, and Art, Music, Drama and Sport are all important to

The whole Junior School has had the chance to decorate biscuits to give to someone special this weekend. There has been some enthusiastic sprinkling, and we hope the recipients enjoy the sugar rush!

The Year 9 and 10 trip to Normandy continues with days packed with fun and experiences. Yesterday the students split into groups to explore the pretty town of Avranches, tried their hand at bread making, and spent the evening with some fun evening activities including volleyball, trampolining and competitive petanque with Mr Sumner! They have also visited a farm that uses its products to make sweet treats such as fudge and caramel as well as more cheese! The students are having a great time, and finding out a lot about French culture and cuisine.

It's Science week! Our Year 11 GCSE Chemistry class were looking at Chromatography today with Dr Lawrence, separating the mixture of soluble chemicals in leaf extract - in this case spinach with it's green pigment chlorophyll. Students prepared the leaf extract crushing spinach with sand as an abrasive, and propanone as a solvent, and created chromatograms to observe how the process separates the leaf extract in terms of bonds between particles.

It's back! The Akeley Wood whole school music competition. We have so many brilliant musicians at Akeley - and we encourage you all to get your entries in - online for Senior School by 2nd April, and in person for Junior School students by Friday to let Mrs Little know you'd like to get involved.
The top entries will go through to a live event in April to discover who will be this year's Akeley Wood Musician of the Year and Young Musician of the Year!
Very exciting, and we can't wait to see your entries.

Year 4 are having a great bonding time together on their residential trip at Rock UK Frontier Centre in Northamptonshire.
As you can see there is quite a bit of snow! But that hasn't dampened spirits, and has in fact added a certain novel element to the trip. We are so impressed with their 'can do' attitude, and they have been enjoying all the fun things to do including the adventure playground, orienteering, archery, team challenges, relaxing in the lodge yesterday evening with reading, activity books and colouring, and lots of fun in the snow!

Next Friday we have a ‘Taster Day’ at our Sixth Form campus - AW6. The day is designed to give a real flavour of what Sixth Form is like with us - for anyone considering studying here. You will experience a day in the life of an AW6 student, get to meet teachers and discuss subject options, find out more about our Future Ready programme and look around our fantastic campus. Do register with our Admissions Team if you’d like to join us.

Some good conversations are being had over coffee at our AW6 networking event for Year 12 & 13 students this morning. With representatives from many industries including personal finance, pharmaceuticals, journalism, construction and sales, students are both finding out about the world of work - in many guises - and honing their ability to start and maintain a good conversation.
Huge thanks to all our guests for coming along and investing in the future of our young people!

Schools Guide Spring Summer 23
We're delighted that our Outdoor Learning has been featured as a case study in the latest edition of The Week UK's Independent Schools Guide. The article, 'A Breath of Fresh Air', starts on page 27, and we are featured on page 29 - click on the link below to read.
Our Forest School at the Junior School and Outdoor Learning Area at the Senior School really have the wow factor - we're lucky to have plenty of space and live up to our name 'Akeley Wood' with woodland and green land all around our sites. Our experience has shown that the value of this experiential learning opportunity is so high, that we recently extended Outdoor Learning sessions all the way up to students in Year 9.
Additionally we have two special 'Get to Know Us' Forest School sessions on 13th March and 24th April, for any families considering a Reception place for this September. Contact our Admissions team for more details: 01280 828122 / [email protected]

What a day we had at the ISA Cross Country Championships at Worksop College with our combined Junior and Senior School team on Saturday.
We are very proud our students who put everything into their running and supported each other in their races throughout the day.
Special mention must go to Sophia C who came an incredible 3rd in her race, and Tabitha B who was not far behind her in 9th place. Florence F in Year 7 also did fantastically with a 15th place.
Well done Team Akeley!

Our Nursery and Junior School children and staff have had a great time dressing up for World Book Day. We’ve had Matildas, a Gangsta Granny, Eeyore, Billionaire Boy, the Cat in the Hat and many more wonderful characters around school today!

Akeley Wood students from both Senior and Junior schools had a fantastic day at the ISA Cross-Country regionals yesterday and no less than 19 students have qualified for the ISA National finals next Saturday - this is exceptional!
Huge congratulations to all of those who ran. Mr Busby said: 'All students represented Akeley Wood School with aplomb on what was a tough hilly course.'

Three of our wonderful Year 7 students, Emma, Harriet and Katie-Lou, took part in the first U12 girls tournament to be held at Northampton Saints Rugby Club last weekend.
The girls played brilliantly with tries for all of them throughout the tournament against teams from Ipswich, Peterborough, Northampton and Bedford, winning 4 games out of their 6.
Afterwards they were able to watch the Saints v Sale match and the Loughborough Lightning v Sale women’s match. A great day for them all!

Our Year 11 students have been at AW6 today to experience what life as a Sixth Form student there might look like.
They began by hearing from Elevate Education about study skills and time management tips, and also heard from Jennie Hunter from Smartstream who likened students to pieces of coal and encouraged them to find and work to their own strengths. 'Through the years, your environment, surroundings and personal experience have shaped you, and will continue to do so. Under pressure, you will become diamonds!'
Current Sixth Form students showed the Year 11s around AW6 and they were able to experience some of the A Level curriculum in taster lessons. There was a real buzz around as students looked to their futures and found out more about AW6!

A busy afternoon at Wicken Park for our Year 3 netballers and footballers making their debut representing the school against local teams. There was great parent support, commendable sportsmanship on show and skillful play too. We hope they had a great time and felt really proud of themselves. The first of many fixtures for this impressive bunch!

On Tuesday we took a choir of 26 children from the Junior School, who’ve been practicing since September, to the Young Voices Concert 2023 in Birmingham.
We took part in a 3 hour rehearsal and then the 2 hour performance where we sang 10 songs and collaborated on ‘Proud’ with Heather Small from M-People! It was recorded to be produced as a single for the charity Place2Be.
What a wonderful day - and the feeling of singing in a choir of over 6000 singers was incredible!
We returned to school after 11pm but it was well worth it!

Do take the opportunity next Tuesday at 5.30pm to come and see the stunning new improvements we've invested in at AW6 - our Sixth Form campus.
We welcome parents and friends of students from Year 7 and upwards. Please do let our Admissions Team know if you'd like to come along, on 01280 828122 or via email at [email protected]

Back in December last year, to celebrate Antartica Day, some of our Year 7 students took part in a competition to design a flag which would then be taken to Antarctica. Four of our students' flags were chosen for the trip, and Neil Brims, an electrician volunteering at the British Antarctic Survey, took our flags to the Halley Research Station. You can see him below with our flags!
Well done to Logan J, Ethan L, Holden S and Zahra H for their winning designs, and thanks to UK Polar Network for making it happen.

Monday morning - the sun is out and so are our students!
While Hannah, the girls and womens development officer at Bucks Cricket engages Year 7 girls in the game, other Year 7s are given some sprint training on the field by Mrs Howkins and Miss Chapman ahead of athletics season. Tennis is happening on the astros and Year 7 boys are getting some cricket practice in ahead of their fixture tomorrow.
It’s a great way to start the week!
