We are thrilled to welcome five new trustee members appointed to The University of Buckingham’s Governing Council. A warm welcome to Kristina Church, ACA, Andy Dunkley, Katie Nykanen, Nadia Strone, MBA, GPHR and Phil Wolfenden.

Mark Qualter, Chair of Council, stated:
“We are fortunate at Buckingham to benefit from the insight of a group of trustees who bring a diverse breadth of skills and experience. Our newest independent members are highly skilled leaders who bring a wealth of expertise gained from the commercial, public and third sectors. That we are able to attract such talent is testament to the appeal of the University and its unique position in the sector.

“Universities are facing unprecedented challenges, and the strength of our board will be key to providing the required support and challenge to the management team in driving forward our strategic ambitions for sustainable growth.”

The Council is the University’s governing body with ultimate responsibility for its strategic plans and the effective use of its resources.

In addition to the new trustee appointments, Council has also approved the co-option of two new members to its committees, welcoming Nitesh Magdani and Martin Kersey. This approach has been taken by Council as a means of creating a pipeline of trustee candidates for the future.

✨✈️ Exciting news from The University of Buckingham’s Law School! A team of undergraduate law students had the great honour of competing in the 47th Edition of the prestigious Telders International Law Moot Court Competition hosted by Universiteit Leiden / Leiden University in The Hague.

Competing against 26 other teams from across Europe, our students participated in four moots, representing both the Applicant and Respondent in a fictitious case before the International Court of Justice. The fictitious case, written by an ICJ Fellow, involved a dispute over an uninhabited island with newly found oil and gas. It escalated to espionage and a cyber-attack. The students represented both the Appellant, seeking to stop the attack, and the Respondents, arguing the attack was a legitimate response to a breach of international law.

Our team submitted detailed written memorials in March and presented compelling oral submissions to panels of esteemed judges, who challenged the students’ understanding of international law, their creativity, and their power of persuasion with many thought-provoking questions.

The team also had the honour of attending the Peace Palace - Vredespaleis for the opening and closing ceremonies, and to witness a very deserving team from the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy of Ukraine win the final round.

Huge well done to our students and thank you to their dedicated coach, Dr Jessica Walsh, and all the staff who made this incredible experience possible!

The University of Buckingham hosted a memorial for Lady Rose Luce, unveiling a plaque beside a new apple tree in her memory. The ceremony took place in the garden of the Humanities Research Centre (formerly Willowbank), where Lord and Lady Luce lived when Lord Luce was Vice-Chancellor of The University of Buckingham between 1992 and 1996. 🌳💚

In attendance on the day were Lord Luce, and his son, Alexander. Guests commented on how thoughtful the ceremony was, bringing back fond memories in a place where Lady Rose Luce spent many happy years.

We had the privilege of welcoming the Honourable Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, Ghana's Minister for Foreign Affairs last week to The University of Buckingham. Vice Chancellor, Professor James Tooley introduced the delegation from Ghana, including dignitaries who were visiting Buckingham as part of the minister’s campaign to be elected as Commonwealth Secretary General.

The Honourable Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey presented to students, many from commonwealth countries, as well as university staff. She delivered her presentation, ‘Realising the democratic dividend: a commonwealth imperative’.

The talk touched on the urgent need for strengthening democracies in the face of disinformation as a threat to peace and opportunity.

The Honourable Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey recently launched her campaign to be elected as the Commonwealth Secretary General and during her talk at Buckingham, she delivered her campaign message:

“I want to lead the Commonwealth to meet the needs of its citizens, so they can lead ambitious and fulfilling lives. As the challenges to democracy increase each year the Commonwealth must be a leader in re-engineering the democratic vision. I will use my well-known passion for accountable governance, and my extensive experience working with global leaders on interventions involving diplomacy, trade, youth, gender and democracy, to reposition the Commonwealth, fulfil our aspirations, and improve the lives of our people. The Commonwealth has great potential - it’s a sleeping giant waiting to be woken.”

We'd like to thank the Honourable Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey for her time, it was a momentous visit, one we'll remember in years to come!

42: The Answer to Almost Everything - Why Is Smell So Important? - Watch the full documentary | ARTE in English 25/05/2024

Professor Luca Turin, Research Professor of Biomedical Research, has featured in an Arte documentary, highlighting his work on smell receptors. The Arte series includes short documentaries of approximately 30 minutes in length, featuring a range of scientific topics.

Luca’s work delves into the intricate science of scent, exploring the molecular complexity of fragrances and challenging traditional shape theory of olfaction. Using the vibrational theory of smell, Luca suggests our noses detect molecular vibrations, offering an alternative perspective on how we perceive scents.

This innovative approach has led to the creation of new odorants and a more efficient method for developing fragrance, which has revolutionised the industry.
