Outdoor Learning Day 4

Today I just wanted to focus on some gross motor development in the outdoor environment.

If you can imagine a point at the centre of your body (between your bellybutton and your heart) this is your centre point and motor skills radiate outwards from it - towards your fingers and your toes when they are known as fine motor skills.

Gross motor development concentrates on developing the strength, co-ordination and control in those big (hence gross) muscle groups in the core, back, shoulders and upper arms and legs.

Encouraging children to take part in “heavy” work is one of the easiest ways to incorporate this development into your outdoor environment, access to lots of chances to lift and maneuver heavy objects such as logs, crates, big buckets, long handed mops, brushes, brooms and spoons and digging in mud and gravel will all exercise and develop gross motor strength, co-ordination and control as children play and explore outdoors.

Logs, planks and even big pumpkins are great easy and cheap additions to your environment that have the potential for building big muscles.

So try planning for the potential of getting physical outdoors but ensure you teach the children your good lifting and handling techniques too.
