We're sad to report the passing of former English teacher, Tim Hawkins. Mr Hawkins taught at RLS in the late 1990s and 2000s, and his family have asked us to share this obituary post for any alumni or former colleagues who remember him. There will be an informal gathering in Stony Stratford on Sunday 9th August, which anyone who knew Mr Hawkins is welcome to join.

With sadness and love, we announce the loss of

Tim Hawkins

who died peacefully on the 19th July 2026, aged 77 years.

Tim grew up in Wantage, and went on to study English at Oxford University before beginning his teaching career. He taught in Jedburgh (Scotland), at Denbigh (Milton Keynes), and at the Royal Latin School (Buckingham). Tim inspired many students over the years with his deep love of words, books, and ideas. He was also a lifelong lover of cricket, films, art, and music.

Tim was a well-known figure around Stony Stratford. He was a regular fixture at The Vaults Bar (or ‘The Office’ as he called it). He could often be found doing the cryptic crossword with a pint of real ale, setting the world to rights.

He will be missed by Kate, Anna, Rose, Meg, Nick, their families and his friends.

A relaxed gathering to remember Tim will be held on Sunday 9th August at 12 noon, in the Stables Bar (behind The Bull Hotel, Stony Stratford).

Tim’s family would be pleased to welcome those who knew him, to raise a glass in his memory.

We've reached the end of term, and students and staff are heading home for the summer break. For those of you who knew Roy Walker, Head of German at RLS for over 30 years from the 1960s, we're sorry to report that Roy passed away a couple of weeks ago. We will be publishing a full obituary in the next edition of Latin Life later this month, but in the meantime we wanted to share details of his funeral for anyone who would like to attend.

The funeral will be held on the 15th July, at 12pm at Stowe Parish Church.

We're sure that alumni will join us in sending deepest condolences to Roy's wife and former RLS maths teacher, Margaret, as well as to his close friends and family.

It was lovely to welcome visitors to Archive Day this afternoon, and to hear from Emma Wise (class of 1994) about her RLS memories and her amazing Garden4Good at the Old Rectory, Quinton, Northamptonshire. For those who couldn't make it, or who live a bit further afield, don't forget you can browse a variety of material online in our digital archive on RLS Connect: https://rlsconnect.royallatin.org/ Recent additions to the online archive include the 1978 and 1980 magazines, The Housemaster programme from 1960, 1961 Sports Day programme, as well as various newspaper cuttings, all of which were originally donated by Old Latins.
