🌈 Welcome to Tiddlywinks! 💛

We’ve had a very special couple of weeks in our Tiddlywinks room as we’ve welcomed lots of new children to our nursery family. 🥰

Starting nursery is a big step for our little ones, and we’ve been giving them time, space and plenty of opportunities to settle, explore and build trusting relationships at their own pace.

From those first little smiles and moments of connection, to exploring new spaces, discovering new resources and finding favourite places to play, our newest Tiddlywinks children are beginning to feel safe, secure and at home. 🏡✨

There have been lots of opportunities for curious hands, busy bodies and developing minds as the children explore their new environment and discover all that Tiddlywinks has to offer.

Most importantly, we’re getting to know each child — their interests, their personalities, their little ways of communicating and the things that make them feel happy and secure.

We’re so pleased to welcome you all to Tiddlywinks. 💕 Here’s to lots of friendships, discoveries, cuddles, adventures and wonderful memories to come!

🍦 Ice Cream Sundae Science! 🧁

Who doesn’t love an ice cream sundae? Especially when it’s made with crazy foaming soap! 🤩

Our children had lots of fun using one-handed tools to scoop and serve their foam, developing their control and coordination while exploring our focus on tools this week.

But, as always, the learning went far beyond the activity itself…

🔍 Observation & curiosity: As more foam was squirted into the tray, one child noticed it expanding and excitedly commented, “Look, it’s growing – that’s incredible!”

👃 Sensory exploration: The children investigated how the foam felt and smelled, making connections to familiar experiences. “It smells like bubblegum!” was one observation.

❄️ Experimentation: They discovered that clapping their hands together with the foam could create their very own snowstorm!

💧 Science & language: When the foam was added to water, we introduced words such as dissolve and disappear, observing what happened as the foam mixed with the water.

🎨 Colour mixing: Even handwashing became an opportunity for discovery! The children noticed that when the pink and blue foam washed into the water, it turned purple.

A simple ice cream shop turned into a wonderful opportunity for observation, investigation, language, sensory exploration, science and tool use — all through playful learning. 🌈✨

✏️ Making Their Mark! ✋

This week in Stepping Stones room we’ve been getting creative with mark making, exploring how our hands, fingers and brushes can create all sorts of wonderful patterns in a variety of sensory materials.

These photos show how we used flour to practise making horizontal, vertical, round and zig-zag marks. What might look like simple lines and shapes is actually an important part of developing the skills needed for early writing. ✍️

The children explored how different movements create different marks, building hand control, coordination and confidence as they experimented.

From swirls and straight lines to wiggly zig-zags… our children are certainly making their mark! 🌟

🌿 A little sneak peek… 🌿

We’ve been very busy behind the scenes over the summer holidays, making some exciting changes to our nursery environment ready to welcome everyone back! ❤️

Our rooms have been reorganised to create spaces that better suit the ages and stages of our children:

🌱 Stepping Stones – our lovely new spaces for our rising 3s and preschool children, with lots of opportunities for exploring, creating, learning and developing independence. Stepping Stones will also have use of the decking area, which will be accessible throughout the day as part of our free-flow provision. Children will be able to choose whether they would like to play and learn indoors or outside, giving them even more space and opportunities to explore.

🌿 Tiddlywinks – a BIG new space especially for our babies and younger toddlers! We’re so excited about this area and have been working hard to make it a calm, inviting and engaging environment for our youngest children to explore safely.

We’re not quite finished yet – we’re still eagerly awaiting delivery of a few new pieces of furniture (because apparently they didn’t get the memo that September is nearly here! 😂), and there are still some finishing touches to add.

But… we couldn’t wait any longer to show you!

👀 Here’s a little sneak peek at what we’ve been up to…

We can’t wait to see the rooms filled with children again and watch them explore their new spaces! 🥰🌿

Today our children had great fun taking part in parachute games! 🌈✨

Parachute play is a fantastic way to support physical development, helping children build coordination, balance and gross motor skills as they lift, wave and move together.

It also encourages communication and language as we explored words such as up, down, in, out, round, under, fast and slow, while listening carefully, following instructions and working as a team.

Learning through play is always the best kind of learning! 💙

Graduation Day has arrived! ✨ 🧑‍🎓 👨‍🎓

Today brings a mix of feelings for everyone here in Stepping Stones. It's a lovely but bittersweet moment, as we watch our little ones transform from tiny infants into confident learners, ready to take their next steps into Big School.

It has truly been a joy to care for your wonderful children. We are grateful for the dedication and kindness of our amazing Abacus team, who have poured their hearts into supporting the learning and development of each child.

As our Stepping Stones begin their exciting new adventures, we wish them all the very best. A heartfelt thank you to all our families for trusting us to be a part of your children's educational journey. Your support means everything to us!

🫧🍽️ Little hands, big life skills! 🍽️🫧

Our children enjoyed practising washing up, drying up, and carefully stacking everything into the drying rack. Activities like these are so much more than just water play—they help develop independence, responsibility, fine motor skills, teamwork, and confidence in everyday life.

To top it all off, they took part in a very important quality control inspection with our wonderful kitchen assistant, Gemma, who was so impressed with their hard work that she offered them all work experience placements! 🌟❤️

Learning through real-life experiences is at the heart of what we do, and we couldn't be prouder of our little superstars! ✨🧽💙

Our little explorers are fully embracing a big interest in bug hunting at the moment! 🐞🔍

The children have been carefully searching for mini beasts, taking the time to stop, observe and talk about what they discover. They have been particularly excited to find several ladybird larvae and even a grasshopper hiding amongst a large green plant. This sparked lots of discussion about camouflage and how some creatures blend perfectly into their surroundings to stay safe.

These wonderful moments of curiosity help the children develop observation skills, learn about the natural world and inspire a lifelong love of nature. 🌿💚

🌿 Infant Mental Health Awareness Week 🌿

This week we are recognising the importance of loving, secure relationships in helping babies and young children thrive.

You’re already making a difference every day… your love, warmth and connection help babies feel safe, valued and understood. 💛

At Abacus, we support this through our nurturing environment and strong key person system, building warm and trusting relationships to help every child feel confident, secure and emotionally supported as they grow.

Small moments. Strong foundations. Brighter futures.
