THE GAMES WE PLAY

Children and teens love to play games in lessons, no matter what their age!

Games engage, embed and enable their learning, and they have such fun trying to beat me! For instance, the Spinner game we play helps children to identify different spelling patterns. SWAPS games also enable children to read and identify different letter patterns and spellings.

We play comprehension games, we play punctuation games, maths games and more…and I’m always on the lookout for more suitable games that enable and engage children in learning!

These games enable children, empower children (especially when they win!) and encourage children… they are learning and they are developing their skills all the time they are playing these games!

Their value is priceless!

And that’s why I use them as part of their learning, alongside structured and tailored lessons.

BEHIND THE SCENES VIEW of PLANNING & DELIVERING LESSONS

Part 2.

Firstly, I drink lots of tea to warm up my brain before I begin planning or delivering lessons! And thanks to the many mums who have offered me tea!

Then I think about my students that I am teaching on a particular day and week. I check through their planning books and look through what we have been learning together.

And then I plan the next steps that the child needs …. Each lesson is multi-sensory, tailored and adapted to the child’s needs and learning styles. This often means finding materials that
I already have and adapting them to the child's needs, OR searching the internet for what they need - and I usually find it - print it out and insert it into the lesson.

I check the plans before we begin the lesson, but even before that, I check in and connect with the parents and child themselves,to see how they are and what they’ve been doing, if they are struggling with anything, or if they need help in any particular area connected to their school work.

I often start the lesson with a game or revising something we’ve been learning, then move the child onto the next step or phase of learning. We read through the books and work on phonics within that book. We work on spellings with *Switch It system* (see video attached) and we use the whiteboard to read and write new and challenging words. We do activities and play games that embed the child’s learning (which they thoroughly enjoy!) and look at their homework together, to make sure they know and understand what to do.

They are all reward with praise and encouragement throughout the lesson. At the end of the lesson, they get stars (depending on their age/stage) and I provide feedback to parents on what we’ve been doing and learning in the session, plus the homework assigned… until the next lesson!

I always follow my main principles of enabling, encouraging, engaging, and empowering students in my planning and delivering lessons.

Each child is important to me. Each child matters.

Do we Enable our Children?

Some children have come to me with little to no self-confidence or self-esteem, they’ve felt embarrassed, ashamed and crushed in the school system. Take, for example, one set of twins I worked with: they were both dyslexic and well behind their peers in reading. They were both disengaged in the classroom and would sit there doing nothing, because they did not know how to proceed - until I started working with them (privately) from a different angle. We read phonic books at their level. We played games. We made books and did ‘arty’ things that they loved. We did things they could connect to, and they made progress.

One of my pillars in my business is Enable -
Why enable you may ask? Because most children with dyslexia or SEN feel the opposite of being empowered because the way children have been taught has disengaged them and left them behind, feeling disempowered or even disabled because our systems have let them down!

So … I enable all my students through engaging them at their level, using systems that work for them - e.g. phonic systems that engage them and that they can access at the level they are at, and enabling progression upwards through all their reading books. You, as parents/caregivers can do the same! You can find your child’s points of interest and use them as your starting point! Use whatever means you can to teach and enable them to make progress, and they will be so glad that you understand them and are on their side!

Do you know when to use CAPITAL LETTERS?

If you ask your child, they will usually say, at the beginning of a sentence! Correct! or their name - also correct! But did you know that you should also use them for names of places, buildings, brands, days of the week, months of the year, and in other instances like, abreviations, e.g. Dr. St. etc.

Well most of the children I've worked with DIDN'T know this! And a lot of them still forget to put capitial letters at the beginning of sentences.

So we have to teach them by telling, showing, and doing! In this video, I demonstrate this to children. Take a look!

Do you pull your hair out trying to get your children organised?

I used to be exactly the same! And it's even worse now for parents who seem to spend their lives ferrying their children around to before and after-school clubs, plus weekend activities! And we all know what it's like when we forget their P.E. kit, lunch boxes, schools notes or letters, etc etc.

Well, parents are not infallable! We have to learn to forgive ourselves when we are trying to balance everything we do, especially if we are working as well! We can easily 'drop the ball' so to speak, with so much going on!

Sometimes it just takes little adjustments, e.g. I use my wall calandar and timers on my phone to remind me of where I'm going, and what time I'm meant to be there - and it really works for me.
