π With our neurodiverse childrenβs behaviour sometimes all is not what it seems.

π Did you know that Katie Quickenden, one of our consultants, brings both professional expertise and personal understanding to the families she supports?
π Katie holds a Foundation Degree in Early Years Education, an Honours Degree in Childhood Studies, and is a qualified Early Years SENCO with extensive experience supporting families through the EHCP process.
π She works alongside families navigating autism, PDA, emotional regulation challenges, behaviour support, EHCP applications, and DLA claims, helping them feel informed, empowered, and supported every step of the way.
β¨ What makes Katie's support especially meaningful is that, alongside her professional knowledge, she is also mum to two neurodivergent boys. Her lived experience gives her a genuine understanding of the joys, challenges, and everyday realities that many families face.
π» Katie is so passionate about helping families access the right support and ensuring that parents feel heard, understood, and never alone on their journey, itβs such a pleasure to work alongside her.
π» Do PM her or email her: [email protected] to arrange a free 30 minute chat and see if she can help you.
π As we celebrate Volunteersβ Week, I want to take a moment to recognise the incredible people who make such a difference through their generosity, passion, and commitment.
π While Sunflower Autism Consultancy is a business, we are also a social enterprise at heart. Our mission has always been to support as many autistic individuals and families as possible, which means that a significant amount of what we do is delivered on a voluntary basis.
β¨ Whether thatβs collaborating with local organisations and charities, supporting community events, providing guidance to families, or helping create more inclusive opportunities, our team regularly gives their time far beyond what is expected.
ππ» I would like to say a huge thank you to all of our consultants for the volunteer work they undertake and for the genuine passion they bring to supporting our community.
π A special mention must go to who consistently goes above and beyond. Katie regularly gives her time, energy, and expertise to support families, attend events, and help wherever she is needed. Her dedication, compassion, and commitment to making a positive difference never go unnoticed, and we are incredibly grateful for everything she does.
π To all of our volunteers, partners, and supporters β thank you. Your kindness and dedication help us reach more families and create meaningful change in our community.
π« Health anxiety and phobias around doctors, illness and hospitals are really common in neurodiverse children & adults.
π« Myself included! So thought Iβd share some things that helped me today.

β¨ For many neurodiverse girls and young women, this may be linked to RSD (Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria) β an intense emotional response to perceived criticism or rejection that can quietly affect friendships, family relationships, romantic relationships, confidence, and everyday life.
π Today, I was talking with a young neurodiverse woman I work with 1:1 about the complexity of RSD and how deeply it can impact relationships.
π For many neurodiverse girls and young women, RSD can show up as defensiveness, avoidance, overthinking, people-pleasing, or mistrust. It can leave them feeling misunderstood, hurt, or emotionally exhausted.
What can look like βoverreactingβ on the outside is often a nervous system responding to a deep fear of rejection, criticism, or not feeling emotionally safe in relationships.
Does this sound familiar for you or your daughter?
β¨ Understanding RSD more deeply can be life-changing. It helps make sense of emotional reactions, relationship patterns, and day-to-day struggles that can otherwise feel confusing or isolating.
π» If youβd like to better understand your own or your daughterβs RSD, its complexities, and how it affects relationships and everyday life, do get in touch to arrange a free 30-minute chat and see whether our 1:1 online workshops could be a good fit for you at [email protected]

π€ I hope everyoneβs managed the transition back to school ok this morning.
π Last night my daughter who has ADHD had nightmares about school and then a terrible nosebleed β a physical response from her nervous system being completely dysregulated with anxiety about going back today. And this is a child who actually loves school! But loving school doesnβt take away the overwhelm, the demands, the pressure, the sensory load, the social expectations, and the anxiety that can build around it all.
π» Something I see so often in the neurodiverse young people I support is how emotional distress and anxiety donβt just stay βin their headβ β they manifest physically. Stomach aches, headaches, sickness, exhaustion, shutdowns, meltdowns, nosebleeds, sleep disturbances, panic.
β¨ It really highlights the intensity of the experience for neurodivergent children and just how much school can impact their nervous systems, even when they are trying their absolute best and even when they enjoy learning.
π So if your child struggled last night or this morning, you are not alone!
