As part of the Primary STEM Challenge Gloucester, delivered in partnership with , pupils worked together to design, build and test potential-powered cars using K'NEX.

Success depended on effective teamwork, with each group sharing ideas, solving problems and refining their designs through testing and collaboration. Along the way, they explored forces, energy and motion while developing communication, resilience and engineering skills.

A fantastic example of how STEM challenges can bring teams together to learn, innovate and achieve great results.

Building a Mars rover was only part of the challenge.

Working in teams of three, students had to communicate their ideas, listen to different viewpoints, divide responsibilities and work together to solve problems. As they designed, built and programmed their LEGO robots, they developed valuable transferable skills including teamwork, communication, resilience and critical thinking.

The technology provides the challenge, but it's the collaboration that brings the learning to life. Watching students explain their thinking, support one another and overcome obstacles together is just as important as the coding itself.

Yesterday marked the first Primary STEM Challenge Gloucestershire (K’nex Challenge) of 2026/27, and what a brilliant start to the year it was.

We were delighted to be working with Renishaw again, and the morning was packed with STEM learning, creativity, and some fantastic potential energy powered‑vehicle designed and built by the pupils.
