Dane Court Grammar School

Dane Court Grammar School Developing knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world

Dane Court Grammar School is a mixed selective secondary school, set on a spacious site in Broadstairs in the heart of Thanet. The school is a friendly and inspiring place in which our students learn and thrive. Learning at Dane Court is an enjoyable and exciting experience. Students are encouraged to develop the skills to learn independently, to lead and work in groups and to research and present

information effectively. Our modern classrooms, laboratories, workshops and creative spaces are stimulating places in which to learn. We continue to work hard to improve teaching and learning and to provide a high quality education for our students. We are proud of our students’ examination achievements this year on the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme and Career-related Programme, where the results were outstanding; the school’s best ever, in fact. Grades at GCSE, including the new English and Mathematics qualifications, were also excellent. Dane Court has a busy extra-curricular life, providing wonderful opportunities for students to extend their learning and social experiences. Students have the chance to participate in a full range of activities and the school has an excellent reputation for success at local, county and national level in a wide range of sports. We offer a wealth of exciting opportunities for our students and would like to invite all pupils who have taken the Kent Test this year to visit the school on Wednesday 18 October. We hope all our students and families have enjoyed a relaxing summer break. We’re looking forward to welcoming everyone back to school this Thursday, 3rd September, for the start of a new academic year.

A particularly warm welcome to our new Year 7 students. We know the first morning can feel a little daunting, but there will be plenty of staff on hand to welcome you, help you find your way and direct you to your mentor rooms.

We’re also delighted to welcome our new Sixth Form students, following another fantastic set of GCSE results. On arrival, please make your way to the Sixth Form Centre, where you’ll be directed to your mentor rooms.

⏰ A few reminders for Thursday:
• Gates open at 8am and all students should be in school by 8:30am.
• The first hour of the day will be spent with mentors, receiving timetables and getting organised for the term ahead.
• For the safety of our students, we ask parents and carers not to drive onto the school site at the beginning or end of the day.

We’re excited to see the school busy again and to welcome both familiar and new faces through the gates.

Here’s to a happy and successful year ahead! ✨

YEAR 7 ENGLISH

With just under a week to go until we welcome our new Year 7 students, we have one important request: Every student needs to bring a reading book with them to every English lesson.

Term 1 will have a strong focus on reading and comprehension, so having a book with them is an essential part of their English learning.

We strongly recommend choosing a book from our carefully curated Year 7 Canon - a collection designed to develop students' literary heritage, cultural capital and love of reading.

Our Year 7 Canon:

Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief - Rick Riordan
Sabriel - Garth Nix
Thief - Malorie Blackman
The Maze Runner - James Dashner
Goodnight Mister Tom - Michelle Magorian
The Girl of Ink and Stars - Kiran Millwood Hargrave
Northern Lights - Philip Pullman
The Secret Garden - Frances Hodgson Burnett
I Am Malala - Malala Yousafzai
The Eagle of the Ninth - Rosemary Sutcliff

Students do not have to choose from the Canon, but we highly recommend it as a fantastic place to start. And there’s an extra incentive… Students who read the whole Year 7 Canon will have opportunities to earn rewards throughout the year! 🌟📚

One of our sixth form students received some wonderful news this week. Gabriella has been selected as the top entry, out of over 1000 applicants, for the Gonville and Caius College Cambridge essay competition: ‘What drives people to travel greener?’.

Gabriella has been invited to a celebratory lunch on the 10th September during which she will have an opportunity to discuss her essay with the Land Economy Director of Studies.

Congratulations, Gabriella. 🌟

Two of our very talented students - Dot and Aurora - played the introducing stage at Broadstairs Folk Week on Friday, playing and singing beautifully to an attentive crowd at the bandstand. Aurora sang a few acoustic covers whilst accompanying herself on guitar and Dot sang two covers and two amazing self-penned original songs. Congratulations to these fab musicians, keep your eyes peeled for more opportunities to be involved with Broadstairs Folk Week next year!

Year 11, it's your turn next! See you next week. 🌟
