Dolly Parton leaves behind an extraordinary legacy — not only through her music and storytelling, but through her belief in the power of books and literacy.
In 1995, inspired by her father’s inability to read and write, Dolly founded the Imagination Library, providing free, high-quality books to children from birth to age five. What began in her home community in Tennessee grew into a global programme, helping millions of children discover the joy of reading and supporting families to build a culture of reading together.
For those of us who work in adult and community learning, Dolly’s message feels particularly powerful: access to books, learning and literacy can change lives and open doors.
Her generosity has helped generations of children develop a love of reading — and, in doing so, has helped build the foundations for lifelong learning.
Thank you, Dolly, for reminding the world of the importance of literacy and learning. ❤️📚
Rest in peace, Dolly Parton (1946–2026).
