You'd be surprised how many people complete their RYA Powerboat Level 2 and then don't quite know what to do next. The certificate gets filed away, seasons pass, and the vision of skippering a boat on holiday stays just out of reach. Equally, there are a number of people for whom the skippering bug bites big time but who are unsure of how to progress their powerboating journey. If either of those realities sounds familiar, we are here to help!
Over the next few weeks, we're taking a look at some of the best routes you can take after your PBL2. We'll cover the RYA Intermediate Powerboat, Day Skipper Shorebased Theory, and VHF SRC marine radio, which are all good options no matter whether you're simply looking to get more experience with boat handling or increase your knowledge of navigation techniques. Stay tuned over the coming weeks for a deep dive into each of these courses with our Head of Training, Sam Chisholm.
As part of the upcoming RLSS UK Drowning Prevention Week, we are pleased to launch a new campaign to support river trusts and conservation charities. We are offering 50% off our industry leading online water safety awareness courses for all volunteers at river and conservation charities. It's our way of saying thank you for all the hard work you do.
The RLSS UK Drowning Prevention Week is a great initiative aimed at raising awareness around how to be safe when working and playing near water. Their mission to bring education about water safety to as many people as possible is one that we wholeheartedly believe in, and we are proud to offer RLSS UK accredited training at our Bristol, Staffordshire and Yorkshire sites.
For any charities which are interested in taking up our half price training offer, make a note of these details and get in touch with our team on [email protected] or 0117 929 1153 to book:
- The offer is valid for the 3-hour Online RLSS UK Water Safety Awareness – DEFRA Aligned Module 1, which as the name suggests, takes place online and is designed for complete beginners. The course covers key safety measures including the principles of land-based rescue and PPE like throw bags and life jackets.
- Offer is valid for volunteers only.
- Volunteers need to be registered by their manager or the trust itself.
- Offer is valid for courses from June to December 2026.

Last Sunday, we were proud to support the RNLI Open Day in Portishead.
It was a fantastic opportunity to meet the crew, explore the lifeboats, and see firsthand the incredible work these volunteers do to keep everyone safe and ensure they all go home.
From live demonstrations to family-friendly activities, there was something for everyone to enjoy.
Every visit, every donation, and every bit of support helps save lives at sea.
Thank you to bmsafety.pontoon for helping us out by lending us the wonderful pirates island. And to everyone who came along and showed their support.

What an honour to host the RYA’s New Horizons showcase event at Bristol Maritime yesterday.
Hands down, the highlight was witnessing the joy on the faces of the cohort from Young Bristol as they received their qualifications. Each candidate has completed a commercially endorsed Powerboat Level 2 certification, including first aid, sea survival and marine radio, giving them the industry-recognised skills to build careers in the marine industry.
For many of them, this programme was the first time they had ever been on a boat, let alone considered working on the water. The New Horizon’s programme — delivered in partnership with the RYA and Young Bristol — is proof that with the right support, that can change.
Bristol Maritime is proud to have provided the training and helped bring the right organisations together. But the real story belongs to the candidates themselves, and to everyone who made this programme possible. If you’d like to support future programmes like this — whether as an employer, partner or funder — please get in touch.
