Bristol Photography Lessons

Most photographers don’t struggle with flash.

They struggle with understanding light.

A lot of photographers learn setups before they learn principles:

Where to place the light
What modifier to use
What settings to dial in

But without understanding why the light behaves the way it does, it’s easy to become dependent on formulas.

That’s usually why flash starts to feel inconsistent or overly complicated.

So I put together a free PDF guide breaking lighting down into 6 simple principles:

* hard vs soft light
* distance and fall-off
* direction and shape
* balancing flash with ambient light
* and why simple setups often work best

It’s aimed at photographers who want more control and intention in their images — especially those working in commercial, portrait, or branding photography.

Such a lovely time of the year to photograph.

Deep autumn colours and high contrast light, helped by a bit of rain!

Thanks to the Wales and West Photography Show and Camera Centre UK for putting on such a brilliant event over the weekend.

I felt very proud to be offered a "gig" speaking there and presenting my talk - The Idea of Ideas.

The venue, the International Convention Centre in Newport, was a fantastic location and a stone's throw from my old teaching ground at the University of Wales in Caerleon.

So that brought back many memories.
