August: palm temple | News and features | University of Bristol A spectacular installation by internationally renowned artist Luke Jerram is now on permanent display outside the main entrance of the University of Bristol’s School of Chemistry.

Researchers at Bristol are carrying out fundamental research to understand how SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes , interacts with our bodies and causes disease. This research is crucial to the development of diagnostic tools, drugs and vaccines.

Bristol alumni have already funded a new incubator in the laboratory where this vital work, led by Dr David Matthews and Dr Andrew Davidson, is taking place. Their generosity has also enabled the Elizabeth Blackwell Institute for Health Research to commit new funds to support research into COVID-19 taking place around the University.

Dear Chemistry Students and Staff,

We’ve put the School of Chemistry into hibernation for now and we do not know how long it will be closed for. But Bristol Chemistry is more than a proud building on the Bristol skyline, it’s our community, and we will continue to support each other. As we get settled into the strange new world of working from home and online teaching/exams, we continue to stand together.

The UoB site continues to have the most up-to-date advice and information and can be accessed at: https://www.bristol.ac.uk/students/coronavirus/.

If you are worried about your studies or you feel you need help managing these changes, please contact our Wellbeing teams or email [email protected]. You can also access Big White Wall and the SU Just Ask service.

If you have any questions or concerns, please use the forum on the DLM or email [email protected], which are open for all student enquiries (UG and PG). Your tutors and project supervisors will be in contact regularly as well, but remember that they have family commitments as well, so please be patient if replies take a little longer.

Current advice for staff can also be found at: https://uob.sharepoint.com/sites/coronavirus. We are beginning to set up new ways of communication in teaching teams and research groups to stay in touch, as well.

UPDATE FOR STUDENTS: Based on the latest government advice, the University is closing all buildings across campus from today, except residences. This closure includes study spaces in the Arts and Social Science Library, which will be closed from 12 midday today. Online library services continue to be available, and our library staff are working remotely to support your studies and research.

Dear Chemistry Students, we hope you are well and finding ways of adjusting to these circumstances. In line with current advice, a lot of our student admin team are working from home, so the best way of contacting us will be by email to [email protected].

The [email protected] is a shared mailbox, so that’s a really good way of getting in touch with us. A number of people will be keeping an eye on it during normal working hours, who can then respond to any queries you might have or pass them on to somebody who can help, if needed.
Depending on your query, your personal tutor or project supervisor might also be good people to contact, and Chris Russell, Chris Adams and Natalie Fey () are happy for you to email them with questions relating to your studies as well, e.g. if your personal tutor falls ill.

The Wellbeing Service also remains open and can be contacted via https://www.bristol.ac.uk/students/wellbeing/services/student-wellbeing-service/. They are available between 09:00 – 17:00 Mon – Fri. Outside these hours, a more limited service will be available from the Residential Life Team who can be contacted by phone on: 0117 428 3302.

If you need to access healthcare, the Students’ Health Service remains open as well. You should make contact by phone in the first instance on 0117 330 2720, so a clinician can make an initial assessment by phone about how best to proceed.
