🕷️Look at this beauty👀

This fantastic image of a female wasp spider was taken by volunteer Chris Taylor at our Bennett’s Patch and White’s Paddock reserve.

Despite its warning stripes, the wasp spider is harmless and its resemblance to a wasp helps to keep predators away⚠️

Females are much larger than the males and have the distinctive markings, whereas males are less colourful and are only active for a short period in the summer.

Males also run the gauntlet of being eaten by the females during the mating season 😮

These amazing wasp spiders are venturing north, following their arrival on the south coast of England just over 100 years ago, and can be found in a variety of habitats but especially grassland.

𝗕𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗽𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝘂𝗽 𝗮 𝘀𝗻𝗮𝗶𝗹, it's really important to give its shell a gentle tap! 🐌 This simple action is crucial to its survival.

When a snail is relaxed, its body, particularly a sensitive part called the mantle, might be slightly outside the shell. The mantle is a key part of the snail's anatomy, responsible for creating the shell and protecting its internal organs.

If you pick up a snail without a tap, you might accidentally damage its mantle. This can cause a serious injury or even be fatal.

By giving the shell a light tap first, you startle the snail, causing it to retract its soft body completely back inside its protective home. This ensures that when you pick it up, you won't harm it. So, next time you see a snail, remember to to keep it safe! 😊

Green Cotham was recently awarded two years funding from the National Lottery! ❤️
This will fund our lead project worker a drop in assistant and gives us funds for plants and tools.

We held interviews on Monday and are delighted to say we have found somebody to take on the role of assistant! They’ve got lots of relevant experience and are pretty interested and excited about plants and community gardening. 🥳 All being well they will start helping us after Easter. 👩‍🌾
