She was a singing student of Margaret Thomas (Bristol) and Margaret Cable (Royal College of Music, London). She started teaching in 2007 and has built up a successful private teaching practice in addition to teaching in schools in Bristol and South Gloucestershire. As a singer and flautist she has been on tour around the world, including America, France, Poland, Italy and Latvia. She has also performed in prestigious venues such as the Royal Albert Hall. Fiona also conducts a flute group, choirs for special occasions, and occasionally runs Singing In Schools days for the Royal School of Church Music. In 2020 Fiona completed her MA in Music through the Open University, having studied alongside teaching for 2 years, and was awarded a Merit. Lessons take place at Fiona's home in Downend on an individual basis, ordinarily for half an hour a week per student during term time. In the summer holidays lessons are available on a more flexible basis. It is expected that students will attend lessons every week during term time - full terms and conditions are available on request. When all teaching slots are full a waiting list is in operation. During lockdowns teaching is delivered remotely via Zoom or FaceTime. Fiona also teaches at Collegiate School and St. Bede's Catholic Colleg, having previously taught at Cathedral Primary School, Bristol and at a number of schools for the South Gloucestershire Music Hub. She was Head of the South Glos @ Warmley Saturday morning centre, and also conducted the music hub’s flute group, Flutissimo. The majority of students work towards exams in musical theatre, classical singing, flute, piano and music theory. There is currently a 100% pass rate at all grades from Step 1/Prep Test through to Diploma with consistently high marks. No student has ever been 'made' to do an exam, but those who do find it extremely rewarding to have a target to work towards. Other performance opportunities include local and national Eisteddfods and the annual student's concert at a local church, which all students are encouraged to participate in. Fiona is also available as a soloist for concerts, recitals, weddings, funerals, etc. Please message or email for further information. Fiona is a fully insured Fellow of the ISM (Incorporated Society of Musicians), a member of the AOTOS (Association of Teachers of Singing), a member of the European Voice Teachers Association (EVTA), is fully insured and DBS checked, and holds ISM Registered Private Teacher Status.

So proud of this young lady! It’s hard not to think of her as a 10-year old though!

I wrote this 5 years ago, and it still rings true. PLEASE ask about qualifications (Grade 8 is NOT a teaching qualification!), insurance, professional body membership, safeguarding, DBS checks, etc. A good teacher will be able to answer questions easily and provide proof. Believe it or not, I have seen a so-called knowledgeable teacher advertise with the treble clef (🎼) back to front!
Former student Martha Kirby has her first performance as Fantine in the West End production of Les Miserables - Musical this evening! She is going to be absolutely fantastic!
