On World Kindness Day, apart from the importance of being kind to others... please make sure you are being kind to yourself! 💛

After over 2 years of promoting the amazing ADHD Bristol Collective support group, I actually went myself. And I felt supported. Like many ADHDers, looking after others comes very naturally, but I have been doing lots of work on being kinder to myself.

I am also making a conscious effort to take my own advice and it always feels good. We talked about the importance of self-compassion and the benefits of coaching.

As a key element of my coaching, I help people be kinder to themselves - anything from mindfulness tools, changing negative self chat, to understanding their rights under the Equalities Act.

Self-compassion isn't selfish. It's essential.

Here are some lovely photos💡

At Interculture, we talk about serious topics and don’t shy away from them, but we also use humour intentionally. It lightens the mood, keeps people engaged, and reminds us of our shared humanity.

What is dehumanisation?

It’s easy to dismiss racist violence as the work of “extremists”. But where’s all this coming from?

These sentiments and hatred are often fuelled by the way politicians and media talk about migrants and racialised communities.

When leaders use words like “illegal”, “invasion”, “swarms”, or “floods”, it gives permission for hate to spread. This is not accidental - it’s part of a political strategy to appear “tough” on immigration, win votes, and distract from inequality.

🔹 In 2018, after Boris Johnson compared Muslim women to “letterboxes”, hate crimes against Muslim communities spiked by 375% in one week.

🔹 Keir Starmer’s recent “island of strangers” remark echoed the infamous Rivers of Blood speech.

This language has real consequences: it tells the public that migrants are not like us, they don’t belong, they are dangerous. And people act on it.

Dehumanisation is not just words- it fuels racism, violence, and exclusion.

✨ Looking Back ✨

Five years ago, we hosted a powerful event in Bristol that created a space for refugee women to share their lived experiences. The panel brought together inspiring voices, including Soad Ali, who continues to empower others through her work for the community and initiatives like her local basketball group.

As we revisit these photos, we are reminded of the importance of listening to and amplifying refugee voices- especially at a time when hostility towards migrants is rising. Just this weekend, over 50-100,000 people marched through London in far-right protests.

Now more than ever, it is crucial to stand with refugees and migrants, to challenge hate, and to continue building spaces where their stories are heard and celebrated.

Looking back✨

Six years ago, we hosted Muslim Women Talking- a panel event in response to Boris Johnson’s dangerous remarks comparing women in niqabs to “letterboxes” and bank robbers”. In the week that followed his comments, attacks on Muslim women rose by 300%, showing the devastating real-world impact of rhetoric.

⭐️Our panel created a space for Muslim women to share their lived experiences and challenge the stereotypes and othering that fuel such hate.

⏩Today, we are seeing a rise in anti-muslim hate. Recent anti-immigration protests- including one here in Bristol on the 3rd of August- have heightened fears and placed racism and anti-Muslim hate back at the forefront of our communities. While the far right is less visible in Bristol, the impact is deeply felt.

🤔Now more than ever, we must ask: what is sitting beneath this hate? And how can we come together to address it?

Looking back at our launch event in 2016: “Challenging Islamophobia”

⭐️We had the privilege of hosting Professor Tariq Modood. As Professor of Sociology, Politics, and Public Policy and Founding Director of the University of Bristol’s Research Centre for the Study of Ethnicity and Citizenship, his work on multiculturalism, racial equality, and the experiences of Muslims in Western societies continues to be as relevant today as it was then. Tariq was also the first to use the term “islamophobia” in academic writing.

💪🏽This event was a milestone for us-creating space to reflect on belonging, identity, and how we can build communities rooted in equity and inclusion. Tariq’s insights helped shape the conversations we are still having.

⏩Fast-forward to today, and his insights feel as urgent as ever. Recent reports from Tell Mama show a surge in Anti-Muslim hate in the UK,with over 6,000 verified incidents last year- a 43% rise from the year before, and double the number just two years ago. .

As an organisation, we are committed to addressing these realities head-on. Looking back at Tariq’s talk reminds us that while progress has been made, the need to challenge stereotypes, reduce othering, and strengthen belonging is greater than ever.

We will continue creating safe spaces for dialogue and action- because belonging and dignity are not optional, they are necessary 🌍✨
