🌳This week we visited our local conker tree, where we collected lots and lots of conkers!
The children filled baskets and bags with conkers, leaves, sticks and other treasures they found.
We sang songs and watched the conkers fall from the tree as the wind blew. 🍂
There was so much to investigate and explore, and the children were curious… 💭
One child asked, “Why do they have a white spot on them?”
This sparked further investigation as we looked closely at the conkers and their spiky shells — feeling the different textures, comparing sizes and shapes, noticing colours and talking about where they come from, how they grow and why they eventually fall from the tree. 🔎🌰
✨ One little conker… endless opportunities. ✨
Today, we set up a simple invitation to play using some of the conkers, guttering, paint, brushes, leaves and a large canvas for the children to explore. 🎨🌰
There was rolling, mark-making, experimenting, creating, problem-solving and discovering as the children played. ✨
✨ We’ve also created a little display at our entrance to share our conker adventures and learning with the children and their families.
🌰 The children will continue to develop their understanding of the life cycle of a conker, whilst exploring conkers as a valuable natural and open-ended resource within their play.
A simple conker collected from a tree has opened up so many opportunities for curiosity, creativity, exploration and learning. 🌰🍂✨
