Team! Our second outdoor cinema event has just been announced 🙌

Old sport… it’s time to dust off your finest 1920s flair (or just your comfiest jumper—we won’t judge).

Join us under the stars for a screening of The Great Gatsby at The Downs Preparatory School. Expect drama, jazz-age glamour and at least one person dramatically wishing they’d learned to dance the Charleston 🕺

🎟️ Tickets are on sale now - don’t be the one hearing about it the next morning over reheated coffee!

🍿 Food & drinks available on site (because Gatsby never did anything on an empty stomach)

🎷 Pre-show entertainment to get you in the mood… think less ‘quiet school night’ and more ‘mini West Egg soirée.’

So polish your pearls, channel your inner Gatsby (or Daisy), and prepare for a night that’s absolutely, positively old sport approved (hurrah!) 🙌

Book your tickets now! https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-great-gatsby-outdoor-cinema-experience-tickets-1991458061671?aff=oddtdtcreator

25 Days of The Downs, reason #11: Moving Up Morning 🙌

For one morning only, children get exactly what they’ve been asking for all year…to be in the year above!

As it turns out, it looks rather fun 🚀

This week, pupils spent time with their new teachers, met their future classmates and discovered what life has in store next September 👏

reason #12: Creativity! 🎨 👩‍🎨 🖼️

There are few things more joyful than a child standing next to their artwork and waiting for you to notice it.

Actually, that’s not quite true…

Usually they’re not waiting 😅

They’re enthusiastically pointing at it from across the room!

This term, our Art Gallery has been bursting with creativity, showcasing the imagination, skill and individuality of our pupils.

Today’s reason to love The Downs: celebrating creative expression and giving every child a chance to shine 🎨

A huge thank you to Mrs Rice and Mrs Toogood for helping our pupils realise their full creative potential 🙌💛🌳

25 Days of The Downs, reason #13: our amazing teachers 🙌

We suspect most people think teaching involves a lot of teaching… and it does. But it also involves finding lost ties, deciphering playground politics, fixing costume emergencies, answering questions that begin with ‘this might be a silly question but...’ and knowing exactly when a child needs encouragement.

Teachers are remarkable people 🤌

Partly because they educate children.

And partly because they do all the other things too 💛

Today, on we’re saying a huge heartfelt thank you to the teaching staff who help make The Downs what it is. Hear from some of our wonderful parent community share their thoughts 👏

25 Days of The Downs, reason #14: Sport 👏🏆🏃‍♂️

Athletics meetings are full of valuable life lessons … with the realisation that the 1500m is significantly longer than it looks from the sidelines being the most important 😅🤧

Last Friday, our athletes travelled to Millfield School to compete against schools from across the region!

There were races, relays, personal bests and enough running to make most adults want a sit down.

The thing we love most about school sport isn’t the medals (although they’re nice). It’s seeing children challenge themselves, support their teammates and discover they can do things they didn’t think possible.

Today’s reason to love The Downs: opportunities to run, jump, throw and occasionally surprise yourself!🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️

Only 4 days to go til’ Prep sports day!

25 Days of The Downs, reason #15: Balance ⚖️🧘‍♀️🙌

One of the great traditions of Preparatory school life is Exeat.

A chance to swap weekend fixtures for family time, school shoes for trainers and, for some, enjoy a Saturday lie-in 👏

Because as important as school life is, so too is having time to rest, recharge and spend time with the people who matter most.

The funny thing about Exeat is that children are often delighted to leave...
..and surprisingly pleased to return!

Today’s reason to love The Downs: finding the right balance between school, friendship and home 🏠 🦍🌳

PS, ginormous deckchairs also help with relaxation and balance in the midst of a busy term 🤌

25 Days of The Downs, reason #16: Forest School! 🌲🌳🪾🏕️

Children have an extraordinary ability to find adventure where adults see... well, a collection of sticks 🫡

A morning in Forest School might involve den building, problem solving, teamwork, exploring, creating and discovering.

At The Downs, we believe the best learning doesn’t always happen sitting at a desk!

Sometimes it happens while balancing on a log, investigating a bug, building a shelter or figuring out how to work together to solve a challenge.

With the help of Miss Impey and our 60-acres, confidence grows, resilience develops and curiosity is always encouraged 🙌🌳🍂
