Trying to keep your child interested in reading can be one of the biggest challenges when it comes to their learning. Here are some easy to follow tips to help them stay engaged and enjoy what they are doing.

1. Be interested in what they are reading. Encourage them to read books based on what they are interested in.

2. Set aside 10-20 minutes a day to read with them. Having someone to read to can make the experience more enjoyable, especially if you take part and give different voices to the characters.

3. Remember that anything can be used for reading. If your child likes a sports team or a certain activity, most papers will have something about that activity in them. Even reading a small article is better than nothing.

4. Make reading interactive. Get the children to act out what they have read, turn it into a fun activity. This will show you what they have remembered and it will encourage them to pay more attention when reading.

5. Set aside time for a family read. A big motivator for children is seeing you as the adult reading as well. Set aside time for the whole family to read together, either the same book or different ones.

I hope these help πŸ™‚ have fun.

This is a fun brain test that Einstein came up with.

Good luck.

Einstein's riddle

The situation

There are 5 houses in five different colors.
In each house lives a person with a different nationality.
These five owners drink a certain type of beverage, smoke a certain brand of cigar and keep a certain pet.
No owners have the same pet, smoke the same brand of cigar or drink the same beverage.
The question is: Who owns the fish?

Hints

the Brit lives in the red house
the Swede keeps dogs as pets
the Dane drinks tea
the green house is on the left of the white house
the green house's owner drinks coffee
the person who smokes Pall Mall rears birds
the owner of the yellow house smokes Dunhill
the man living in the center house drinks milk
the Norwegian lives in the first house
the man who smokes blends lives next to the one who keeps cats
the man who keeps horses lives next to the man who smokes Dunhill
the owner who smokes BlueMaster drinks beer
the German smokes Prince
the Norwegian lives next to the blue house
the man who smokes blend has a neighbor who drinks water

I’ve had lots of parents ask me how they can keep their children motivated to work during this tough time, so I have come up with a couple of ways in which may help.

1. Keep them active. Everyone knows that exercise is good for the mind, so having regular breaks where you do a light physical activity can help rejuvenate the mind.

2. Make a to do list. If you create a list of what you expect them to do, then it gives children a clear objective to meet which can motivate them to complete the work quicker with less fuss.

3. Rewards. Motivating children with rewards is a technique I use in the classroom all them time. If they have something to look forward to, it can motivate them to complete the work, quickly and accurately, knowing that they have something fun to look forward to.

4. Using signals. As weird as it may sound, communication when they are working can be extremely distracting. Using simple signals with your child can help keep them focused, for example, tapping their work to remind them to stay focused or raising your hand to signal to them to stop are good ways to keep distractions down.

5. Keep all electronic devices away. I know this one sounds obvious, but even having a phone within ear shot so that they can hear when they have received a message can be distracting. Keep them all away from the area of work and then once they have finished, they can go on their phones, iPads etc.

I hope these help, if you have any questions feel free to ask.
