Which tone did we miss? 👀

“Eh oui, c’est ça.”
It looks like such a simple French sentence.

On paper, it means something like:

“Yes, exactly.”
“Yep, that’s right.”
“That’s it.”

But in real life?

It all depends on the tone.

It can sound:

😊 supportive: Yes, exactly! You’ve got it!
😕 disappointed: Yeah… unfortunately, that’s right.
🤔 suspicious: Right… is that what happened?
😉 playful: Oh yes, exactly…
😱 shocked: Wait, that’s actually it?!

Same words.

Completely different energy.

And this is why French isn’t just about translating vocabulary.

It’s about listening to the rhythm, reading the expression, and catching the little emotion behind the sentence.

Most people learn expressions like un coup de bol, un coup de main or un coup de barre one by one.

But here’s the trick: coup is a building block.

Un + coup + de... Then look at the noun that comes after it:

👣 Un coup de pied = a kick
🤝 Un coup de main = a helping hand
🍀 Un coup de bol = a stroke of luck
😴 Un coup de barre = a sudden wave of exhaustion

And that’s only the beginning...

☀️ Un coup de soleil = sunburn
📞 Un coup de téléphone (or un coup de fil) = a phone call
👀 Un coup d’œil = a quick glance
🧹 Un coup de balai = a quick sweep
😔 Un coup de cafard = a bout of the blues
🥶 Un coup de froid = a cold snap

..and the list goes on.

Instead of memorising dozens of expressions, start recognising the pattern. That’s when French begins to feel logical.
