Fantastic work by Army Warhog!

Started a new piece — still deep in the linework phase on an artwork based on Operation Gothic Serpent.

This was the 1993 U.S. mission in Mogadishu that led to the Battle of Mogadishu, where Army Rangers, Delta Force, and aircrews fought through intense urban combat while trying to extract downed helicopter crews. One of the most brutal and defining operations of modern special warfare.

From 1–10, how excited are you to see this one come to life? Leave a comment

And thank you to for assisting with the reference’s they incredible

Capel Military Show 2025….. What a show. Firstly we want to express our admiration and thanks to the whole organising team for what they achieved this year. The effort put in to recover from the downpours of 2024 was just incredible and really showed.

We decided as a group that we would put maximum effort into our 2025 display in order to show our appreciation for the hard work. Sadly after the weather of 2024 our Black hawk helicopter prop was rendered useable, so we made our biggest investment to date and commissioned a brand new and massively improved one. Thank you to Yorkshire Props for building it in time to arrive on our first day of setup giving us some time to add more paint and weathering to really dress it into our display. The feedback made it all worth while.

We always try to put on the best display we can no matter the weather. In contrast to the wet of last year, soaring heat saw us grafting into the night to be able to safely achieve what we needed to. The display takes nearly 2 weeks to build and takes a lot of lifting, hammering and running around to complete.

We feel very grateful to be able to do our small bit to honour all those that took part in the real ‘Battle of Mogadishu’ enduring higher temperatures, real gunfire and struggle whilst fighting for their lives and their friends beside them.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to come over and watch us. We had a lot of great responses including many people who had travelled from all over Europe just to see us display. This means so much to us.

So here’s to 2026 and what ever the next year brings. If you are looking for somewhere to display or just a show to visit we cannot recommend the Capel Military show highly enough!

The ‘barbaric’ true story of Black Hawk Down In 1992, 18 US peacekeepers were killed by Somalia militiamen in flip-flops. What went wrong – and did it..
"Surviving Black Hawk Down" is now available on Netflix

Sergeant Kenneth Thomas remembers the moment the Black Hawk Down incident in Mogadishu began to feel like a movie script. It was October 3, 1993, and after a raid on a warlord’s hideout in downtown Mogadishu, he and around 100 other US troops were surrounded by thousands of Somali militiamen.

“We used to call that the Hollywood moment, because we’d never seen anything like it other than in the movies,” recalls Thomas, 59, who had joined the US military just two years before, following in the footsteps of his Vietnam veteran father. “There was just so much gunfire in every direction, rounds coming in, rounds going out. I don’t remember feeling overwhelmed – but then people started getting hit and going down.”

That was when the Hollywood script went awry, when the “bad guys” came close to winning. In the 18-hour gun battle that ensued, 18 US troops died and 73 were wounded, making it America’s deadliest single episode of combat since Vietnam. To add to the horror, soldiers’ corpses were dragged through the streets by cheering militiamen. Four days later, President Bill Clinton announced a US withdrawal – taking home an abject lesson in the perils of foreign intervention.

The whole story is already well-chronicled, first by author Mark Bowden’s bestseller 1999 Black Hawk Down, and then by Ridley Scott’s 2001 blockbuster movie of the same name. It is testimony to its enduring power that it has now received the Netflix documentary treatment, courtesy of a new three-part series airing now.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them.

October 3rd and 4th 1993, Mogadishu, Somalia. A mission to apprehend key clan members took a drastic turn when 2 Black Hawks were shot down. After a brutal fire fight lasting 15 hours, 18 US service members lost their lives during and another a few days following the raid. Recorded as the some of the longest sustained combat by US forces since Vietnam. The Battle of Mogadishu changed military operations forever and stands as an incredible display of bravery, grit and determination to Never Leave a Man Behind. Today more than ever we remember them, the men of Task Force Ranger and those alongside them.
