If you put £ 20K into setting up a cabin to let, that's with the cabin, outdoor kitchen. fire pit and compost loo you will exceed an £ 8K return on your money in the first year. 26 weekends at £ 300 is £ 7,800 throw in some full weeks in April, June, July, August and October at £ 500/ week. This would add another £ 5K. Take out your admin, cleaning, washing, firewood and tidying up and you are well ahead of a 40% return. It's not difficult maths!

Camp Fire Cooking

Sam's Lamb Stew Recipe

1 leg or shoulder of lamb cut in half
4 onions
5-6 cloves garlic
4 potatoes
2 sweet potatoes
2 carrots
2 tins chopped tomatoes
1 tin prunes de-stoned
Chicken stock
Seasoning - black pepper, cellary salt, turmeric, mint, mixed herbs

Very simple prep, use cast iron pot (dutch oven) brown onions then meat then lightly colour garlic. Add pepper/ turmeric. Chop up all veg and add everything to the pot. Add additional water to cover if necessary. Bring almost to the boil then simmer very slowly for 3 -4 hours. Winner winner lamb stew dinner!

Spring is coming and life will soon be back to normal. Having your own cabin in the great outdoors is an escape to the country we all need after lockdown. We have a cabin ready to go all you have to do is to level a site lay on a water and electric supply and you could be in the same day. To this, you would need to add an outdoor kitchen area, firepit and compost loo. Alternatively, if you have no mains water or power you can set it all up 'off-grid. Add a solar panel to pump carried in water and to provide lighting. I have my own personal cabin in the woods, its off-grid, solar for lighting and a wood burner for heating. Outside I have an outdoor kitchen, shower and compost loo. Some years I have stayed up to 90 nights in it so I know what I'm talking about. For the longevity of a cabin, there are some key points you need to know. The cabin needs to be fully insulated to keep out the damp. The heating system has to be adequate to fully 'air' the cabin on a regular basis, at least once every two weeks. By this, I mean getting the internal temperature up to 25 degrees for 2-3 hours. This way you will not have any damp problems. You do not want to do any cooking inside the cabin. Cooking produces unwanted steam and smells. An exception would be with a slow cooker for instance. Definitely no fried kippers! The outdoor area is the key to getting the most out of your location. A windbreak is vital as is a covered kitchen area to prevent wind and rain spoiling the experience. The location of the fire pit and cooking area needs to be so the prevailing wind takes the smoke away from the cabin and seating area. My cooking set up is made from two 40 gallon drum bases and with a second drum cut long ways to provide two lids. Wire mesh provides the grill to put the kettle and pots on. Under one of the drums is a stone-lined pit big enough to accommodate a Dutch oven. With this, I can prep a meal on top and then place it in the pit to slow cook. We are not about providing a hotel room in the woods but an off-grid experience without modern conveniences so you can get back to basics and back to nature. There is nothing more joyful than the dawn chorus, and the silence of the woods
