Exciting News!
We’re delighted to announce Tysers Insurance as the Gold Sponsor for our conference this year.
Representing Tysers will be Lisa Bainbridge and Liz Jones, who are looking forward to reconnecting with clients and member schools across the region.
Liz shared her thoughts on the theme:
“The Art of Explanation is something we truly value. Simplifying the complexities of insurance is at the heart of what we do, and we’re excited for a day of insightful conversations and collaboration.”
Throughout the event, the Tysers’ team will be available to help members navigate their insurance options and answer any questions.

Calling all English language teachers from across the south-west, Wales and further afield!
Come and join our annual conference in Bristol on Saturday 15 November.
We have organised for some fantastic EFL speakers to join our conference to share their pedagogical knowledge, ideas and inspiration:
Jo Szoke has been teaching English for more than 15 years. Her main interests include artificial intelligence in education, AI literacy, and assessment and feedback. Her co-written book on AI literacy development has just been published by DELTA Publishing and has already almost sold out of its first imprint.
Shaun Wilden has over 30 years of experience as a teacher, trainer, and academic leader. During Shaun's session he will consider the place of games throughout ELT history and introduce the concept of game mechanics. The session aims to encourage you to broaden your own range of games in the classroom, and mixes methodology with practical application.
John Hughes is an ELT trainer and author. With over 100 titles, his course book series include Life (National Geographic Learning). In this practical session, he will explore the impact of images on language learning in terms of their ability to engage, explain, personalise and memorise. The session will include a mixture of methods and practical activities to use on Monday morning.
Julie Moore is a lexicographer and corpus researcher, with extensive experience working on learner’s dictionaries. In a climate of instant feedback, a quick answer to a language query in a real-world situation might be useful, but quick fixes don't necessarily help learning. We’ll touch on why taking time to analyse a word, deciding what to look up, then processing what they find helps learners build a deeper understanding and retain vocabulary.
David Booth heads up the Test Development team for Pearson English Language Learning. David's workshop will look at how assessment can be used in the classroom to help learners. We will discuss current models of language learning and measurement and how they help define learning paths and goal setting and, critically, what is missing.

We are looking forward to welcoming Steve Lowy, to close our English UK South West Annual Conference on 15th November!
Steve is the Chair of BETA (British Educational Travel Association) and is passionate about promoting the industry to young people and is an avid traveller and chef who believes that travel can be a force of good, especially in the current global turbulent political times we live in.
In his engaging session, Steve will share key insights from his new book, offering practical takeaways for schools and organisations working in the international youth travel and education sector.
Drawing on his experience of running a family-owned business, he will explore how to build long-term trust and loyalty with young travellers and partners alike – and how clear communication plays a vital role in that process.
Steve will also highlight emerging market trends, the power of strategic planning and effective marketing approaches, all grounded in real-life examples.
Expect an honest, inspiring and useful session full of ideas you can apply in your own school or organisation.

🙋♀️ Introducing our first plenary speaker for our annual conference 🙋♂️
After hearing her inspiring talk at IATEFL in April, we knew we had to invite Jo to come and talk at our conference this year, and we are very pleased to confirm she accepted 🎉
Not only is Jo coming all the way from Hungary to talk at our conference, but she is also providing a hands-on practical workshop for teachers.
Jo has been teaching English for more than 15 years in Hungary, Poland, and in the UK. Her main interests include artificial intelligence in education, AI literacy, and assessment and feedback. Her co-written book on AI literacy development has just been published by DELTA Publishing and has already almost sold out of its first imprint.
As her book title suggests, the content of her talk and workshop will go beyond our first look at AI as something new for teachers and language schools to grapple with...
"As we’re becoming more and more used to using it, we now have time to deal with something that’s even more important than how we can generate gap fills and grade student papers with it. And that is whether we should use it to grade student papers in the first place?
Or what to do with students cyberbullying each other with deepfakes or believing information or sources to be true when, in fact, they are AI-generated?
Being skilled users of AI actually starts at becoming AI literate, so in this interactive talk, we’re going to look at what AI literacy is, why it’s important, and what activities we can try to improve our students’ and our own AI literacy."

South-West Fam Trip 2025
Where do we start with this year’s fam trip to the south-west?!
Following the Alphe London conference at the end of August, we welcomed a special group of language school agents to introduce them to our beautiful corner of the UK.
Over three days, we went on an end of summer road and train trip from London to Falmouth visiting English UK South West member schools across the region.
By the end of the tour, it felt more like a family trip than a fam trip :)
This year is the 200th anniversary of the British rail network and the Great Western Railway – designed almost exclusively by Brunel - forms a particularly special part of that network.
Our initial idea was to the use the Great Western Railway to take a group of agents on a journey through our member schools across the south-west.
It is a magical link that connects every single school in our network.
(In the end we did cheat a little bit and use some minibuses, but we had the most fun when we were on the train!)
There were so many great moments, but we’ve tried to choose a few of our favourites to summarise the unforgettable adventure we had introducing and welcoming agents to our wonderful network of independent schools.
