On 8th June, two BSL Dementia workshops were held at the Vassall Centre, delivered by Freda Bradshaw, with sponsorship from Signworld and support from CFD (Centre for Deaf and Hard of Hearing People). Both the afternoon and evening sessions were very well attended.

It was refreshing to receive information firsthand from an experienced Deaf presenter, rather than through BSL/English interpreters. Freda delivered the workshops in a clear, engaging, and accessible way, creating a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere throughout.

The two-hour sessions covered the five main types of dementia, with practical examples and real-life stories demonstrating ways to support people living with dementia and help them feel happier and more included. Several topics provided plenty of food for thought and encouraged attendees to reflect on future planning.

One particularly important area discussed was the value of having a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) in place for both health and welfare, and property and financial affairs. The workshop highlighted how vital these arrangements can be for individuals and their families.

There is also a page called “Deaf Dementia – BSL”, which provides clear and accessible information about the different types of dementia.

I would highly recommend attending one of Freda’s workshops in the future. The information is invaluable, and you certainly won’t be disappointed.
