Most people get to grow into adulthood slowly.

For a lot of young people leaving care, it arrives all at once at 18. First tenancy, first food shop on a real budget, first time working out which bill is which, and far less to fall back on.

Sky News reported this week that care leavers are dying at an estimated three to four times the rate of other young people their age, and that 18 is the age where more of those deaths happen than any other.

Moving On is built for that moment. Five practical areas of independent living: building a home, being healthy, managing money, starting your career and relating to people.

No exams and no deadlines, with a trusted adult alongside you the whole way. It won’t fix what that report describes. But no young person should reach 18 and have to work all of this out on their own.

Care leavers are more than twice as likely to be out of education, work or training than their peers. 40% against 15%.

That gap is about the head start most young people get and care leavers often don’t: someone to show them how a tenancy works, how to budget, how to handle the knock that comes out of nowhere. This is not a question of ability.

Moving On is built to close it. Five practical modules that give young people the skills and the confidence to take control of their own future.

Ask a teacher what ASDAN changes for a learner and you won’t get an answer about courses and qualifications.

We put that question to three teachers who deliver ASDAN. They were interviewed separately at a moderation day and hadn’t compared notes beforehand.

What came back was learner voice, and how much difference it makes when a young person picks work around something they’re interested in. The friendships that form on a trip and never quite form in a classroom. Pupils who’ll now try something they’d have flatly refused a year ago.

Those things are hard to evidence on paper and easy to see in a young person.
