☀️ It's a sunny morning here and this is just me reminding myself to post bits of my practise even if it's not perfect to appease the algorithmic gods of content.. or something.. 🤔 also nothing is perfect and no-one really cares anyway. Do they?

Banjo Tabs — Banjo Classes Online 18/10/2024

Clawhammer and 3 finger players can download banjo tabs for the tune Down The Road/Ida Red in the upcoming November workshop here: https://banjoclasses.com/banjotabs

🤓A note to my regular 3 finger students: The basic melody and more complex arrangement are slightly different from ones we've looked at so check them out!

🪕A note for Clawhammer players:
In the intermediate tab of Ida Red there are two techniques - drop-thumbing and plucking. If you want to have a go at this piece you will need to ignore the repeat signs, repeat the penultimate bar (2nd fret 4th, open 3rd string) and tag 4 of the last bar, or your own g-licks on the end of the piece to play along with the arrangements of Down The Road.

Any questions, ask away! ☺️

💥 Exciting news!! 💥
Bristol banjo workshop just became Bristol Bluegrass workshop where you will have the chance to learn guitar, mandolin and double bass as well!

Your tutors will be Bluegrass band Old Baby Mackerel who have years of playing and teaching experience. We will work towards all 4 instruments playing one time together by the end of the workshop.

In this workshop we’re going to look at Down The Road/Ida Red which are basically the same tune. I will post the tab in this event but will also have hard copies on the day.

Banjo:
Three finger players you can add in short rolls (pinches, 151s, 251s) and long rolls (forward, foggy mountain, etc) as you feel and Clawhammer players add some strums after the long notes and 5th string drones after the short notes. I’ll also have some extra challenges on the day in the form of licks and phrases if you need it and we’ll go through all this in the workshop so don’t worry if that doesn’t make any sense! I have also added more complex arrangements for both styles if you need an extra challenge, just drop me a message on here.

The event is at St Anne's House, Bristol and runs from 11am to 1:30pm on Saturday 2nd November. It costs £40, payable by cash or card on the day and there will be breaks and refreshments provided. Please use the booking form to book your place.

We've all been there at some point. Practising takes practise and I don't think many of us are taught how to actually do it. My top tip is to try and do short practises but focus on making them regular, rather than doing one long one, burning out and not doing more practise for a while!

If you can stop before you get tired/overwhelmed/bored then you leave some brain juice for the next time and it will set you up to come back to it sooner rather than later.

The next banjo workshop is *tomorrow* Saturday 3rd August from 11am to 1:30pm at St Annes House, Bristol, BS4 4AB and is open to both three-finger and Clawhammer players of all levels.

We will be looking at a slightly longer tune this time (Bury Me Beneath The Willow) and as always there will be the chance to look at new techniques for both three-finger and clawhammer players. We will look at how it works with short rolls as well as long rolls and licks, and how we can approach the melody with it’s slightly syncopated note placement.

For this workshop I’m very excited to say that we will be joined by the very talented Jack Cookson on Double Bass as well as myself on guitar for the last half hour of us playing through our various versions of the tune!

It will be £40 payable on the day by cash or card and there will be a break half way through. There is free parking at St Annes House and I will provide tea, coffee and biscuits. You can find more info on their website stanneshouse.org but let me know if you have any questions!
