Driving up the M4 to Brighton, three giant words painted on the side of a farm building grabbed my attention:
RESISTANCE IS FERTILE!
It led me to reflect on times in my own life where resistance did indeed prove to be fertile. When I refused to be held back or bow to others’ ideas of what to do.
Such as being told I “couldn’t afford” a two year yoga teacher training back in 2000 or when I wanted to take a leap and invest in a coaching certification programme and was met with no encouragement or support where I hoped to find it.
I found a way to do both, of course!
Then there have been the times when well-meaning folk have suggested I go and ‘get another job’ to make life easier.
Each time, I resisted the advice and chose to honour what felt right for me.
I trusted my gut.
I backed myself.
Every time, life got more fertile!
Creativity does not thrive in an over-full schedule, a tired mind or a stressed body.
So I choose to stand up for what I value and nurture a fertile existence.
What does that mean?
For me, it means protecting space in my schedule to eat well, exercise and rest. It means not doing everything myself. I invest in support - yoga teachers, coaches that inspire me, an admin assistant who takes on some tasks that would sap my energy and creativity.
Are you still complying to others’ ideas of what you should be doing?

Breathing practice changes us.
From understanding and experiencing the mechanics of this most vital bodily function
to becoming more sensitive to the intertwinement of breath with posture & movement
to gently unravelling old postural habits and re-discovering our natural breath
to regulating energy levels and temperature
to improving the quality of our attention & focus
to holding ourselves through emotional ups & downs, learning how to be with ourselves
to teaching us how to be still
to taking us gently by the hand and connecting us with the source of All
to showing us that what we are looking for is already here,
there is nowhere in this human being-ness that is not infused with breath.
I am running the 6 week Breathe course again, starting 28th October. I don’t know if/when I’ll run it again so if you’re interested, make time for it!

Did it! Despite waking up at 6.47am (thought the alarm was set for 6 but it wasn’t 😬) - managed to be in Jubilee pool not too long after my 7am start time and got 50 lengths in (1,100 metres) at the Jubileeathon. Quite happy with that.
To be honest, it feels like more of a challenge to post this cheesy photo on here than to do the swim!
I’ve reached £35 of my £40 target - thank you to my friends who’ve donated so far! If you can add a £ or two to the pot, I’d be super chuffed!

STOP PRESS! Just signed up for a swimathon tomorrow morning!
Can you spare a £ or two?
Please help me raise vital funds for Jubilee Swimming Pool! Jubilee became Bristol’s first community-run pool in 2022 after a campaign to save it from closure. It is now run by Friends of Jubilee Pool on a 35 year lease from Bristol City Council. your support will really make a difference - EVERY £1 HELPS!
I will be taking part in a 24 hour Swimathon - doing my bit at 7am on Sunday morning 12th Oct. Taking part involves pledging to try and raise £40 for the Pool. Of course I would be thrilled to raise more but mainly want to do my bit so please help me get there!
Not sure how many lengths I’ll do - my usual is 24 so let’s see!

I’m counting my blessings after a special weekend of fun, friendship and magical entertainment. Feeling the abundance of life right through to my bones!
How easy it is to forget though!
Even though life is kind to us approximately 99% of the time, the ego would have us fixate on the 1% of events that are challenging and painful.
We dwell on thoughts of worst-case scenarios even though most of our lives are anything but.
If we were to look more objectively, we might see that reality is actually highly supportive and kind to us. We would know the truth in the words of motivational author Louise Hay who would often say
“Life LOVES You”.
How different would life feel if you were more often able to view it through this lens? A more accurate lens?
This is the work of yoga; to uncover reality - a reality that is inherently supportive.
There are numerous pathways towards truth - I choose movement practices that encourage listening to my body, breathwork that unlocks and re-awakens the life inside and coaching processes that open my mind and heart.
Through these practices, we naturally experience more abundance in life and our eyes open to the serendipity, opportunity and miracles of day to day existence.
If you’d like more of this too, join me for my last retreat of 2025 - just announced!

30 yrs ago, 2 yrs in to my yoga journey, I stumbled across a Scaravelli-inspired yoga class.
I didn’t know what to make of it.
Compared with other yoga classes, it didn’t feel like I was ‘doing’ very much.
But something in me recognized the truth of what was being taught.
I never looked back.
I sought teachers who were direct students of Vanda. Each developed and refined their practice, making it their own – as yoga should be.
Freedom is not found by breathing in or out when the teacher says so, nor is it found by forcing your body into shapes it does not yet understand.
At various yoga studios I have taught at, I have sometimes overheard or seen a class where all of the students were attempting to keep up with the timing of the teacher’s instructions – often with undignified consequences! I sometimes thought to myself “REALLY? People are STILL teaching like this?”
I want yoga that brings me into a more intimate, sensitive relationship with my body, my breath (and self) – not just ticks another pose off the list.
Last time I went to a class where someone was teaching what you might call ‘1970s yoga’ was back in 2002.
I found it dull, un-creative – the best thing about it was that it affirmed I was on the right path with what I was already doing.
Yoga is about freedom and listening, deep listening.
In ‘Awakening The Spine’ Scaravelli wrote
“BE CAREFUL, VERY CAREFUL about organizations.
Yoga cannot be organized, must not be organized.
Organizations kill work.
Love is everywhere, in everything, IS everything.
But if you confine it, enclose it in a box or in a definite place, it disappears.”
Unlike some, she did not turn her yoga in to a style, routine, trademark, series or method.
No hierarchy, no ‘levels’.
Freedom is for everyone, starting from anywhere.
