Celebrating Loose Parts Play!
Loose parts are materials that are open ended and enables children to be imaginative in their play the objects can be moved, carried, combined, redesigned, lined up, and taken apart and put back together in multiple ways.
They are materials with no specific set of directions that can be used alone or combined with other materials. Children can use these resources to express themselves freely and creatively because there are no limitations or expectations.
The concepts of “loose ends” is understood by children worldwide; any child noticing odds and ends lying about will instinctively pick them up and put them to use. This is because children have active hands and active minds with a gift of seeing possibilities that adults miss.
Loose parts encourage children to learn lifelong skills such as teamwork, problem solving, resilience and negotiation. We have observed children as young as two working together to pull tires across the garden using a long plastic tubes, this identifies problem solving, working together and physical development plus more! Most importantly loose parts supports children’s confidence in trying new things without the fear of failure.
Loose parts have no right or wrong way of being used and as such there is no failure when it comes to making their creations.
