The correct use of the equals sign is an important element in students mastering the language of mathematics.
This year 5 student has 'got the right answer' but the steps are mathematically incorrect. Everything to the right of the equals sign must have the same value as everything to the left.
By guiding students to not only solve the question in front of them, but to also develop sound mathematical habits, we are taking the long view and preparing them for much more challenging work in the future.
