We are very excited to share the first update on the RPS Distinctions Programme, which will begin in 2027!

The RPS has recognised achievement in photography for more than 130 years. Over that time, RPS Distinctions have evolved alongside photography itself, responding to changes in photographic practice, technology and the ways photographers develop and present their work.

This year we have undertaken a substantial redevelopment of the programme, introducing clearer standards and guidance, stronger support for applicants, and revised approaches to assessment, moderation and feedback. The updated programme also recognises the breadth of contemporary photographic practice and the different ways photographers can demonstrate achievement.

Ian Berry the longest-serving member of Magnum Photos and a RPS Honorary Fellow, has passed away at the age of 92. Born in Lancashire in 1934, Berry made his reputation in South Africa working for the Daily Mail and later Drum magazine. He was the sole photographer to document the massacre at Sharpeville in 1960 and his images were used during the trial to prove the victims’ innocence.

Invited by Henri Cartier-Bresson to join Magnum in 1962, Berry went on to document conflicts, political change and everyday life across the world, from Vietnam and Ethiopia to Northern Ireland and China.

A recipient of numerous awards and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society, Berry’s extraordinary career was defined by curiosity, humanity and an enduring commitment to photography.

Our thoughts are with his family and friends.
