At Our Lady Of Lourdes Preschool, we enjoy exploring our outdoor area in all types of weather, but what better way to enjoy our garden then exploring, and playing in this glorious spring sunshine!!

A variety of activities have been set up outside for the children to explore. At Our Lady Of Lourdes Preschool, we believe that all indoor learning, and activities, can be taken outside to be repeated, and extended.

FOCUS ACTIVITY ~ EXTENSION OF SENSORY PLAY.

Yesterday, the children at preschool explored with an activity that helped to explore, and develop their sense of smell. This morning, we have extended our loose theme of sensory play to explore, and to develop a child’s sense of sight and sense of touch.

This activity required spots of paint to be covered over with cling film. The children used their hands to feel the texture of the cling film and the coldness of the paint. The children enjoyed watching the colours blend together as they used their hands to mix the paint. They children were surprised and fascinated by the fact that the paint did not come off on their hands!! 😊

FOCUS ACTIVITY.

This morning some of the children have been exploring with a sensory activity that also helped to develop their fine motor skills, as well as encouraging their understanding of how to use tools in a safe way.

This particular focus activity focussed on developing the children’s sense of smell, but all sensory experiences are vital for a child’s development. Sensory activities are crucial for development as they boost brain connectivity, cognitive growth, and problem-solving skills.

RED NOSE WEEK.

COMIC RELIEF.

RED NOSE DAY ~ FRIDAY 20TH MARCH 2026.

At Our Lady Of Lourdes Preschool we will be celebrating Red Nose Day all week in order to raise money for Comic Relief.
The children are learning the Makaton Sign for red, and this morning we have been experimenting with the colour red by painting giant red noses, as well as exploring with a variety of red construction resources.

One child told an adult that they had created a “Tiger red nose.”, whilst another child got very excited that all of the construction pieces on the activity table were red!! ❤️

FOCUS ACTIVITY.

At Our Lady Of Lourdes Preschool, the children are showing a very strong interest in creative activities, and in particular using stickers. They are also enjoying exploring shapes, so why not combine these two interests!!

This morning the children used shape stickers to create a collage. The children named the shapes that they were using as they created their individual collage. Not only was this a creative maths activity, but it also helped to develop the children’s fine motor skills by encouraging the children to peel the stickers by themself.

MAKATON SIGNING ~ SIGN OF THE WEEK ~ “MUMMY”.

At Our Lady Of Lourdes Preschool, we are keen users of Makaton and are passionate about teaching Makaton to all of the children.

But what is Makaton, I hear some of you say?

Makaton is a unique language programme that uses speech, signs (gestures), and symbols (pictures) to aid people to communicate. When using Makaton you ALWAYS speak as you sign.

As we all know, Sunday is a very special day for some of us as it is Mothering Sunday. An adult has been teaching the children the Makaton Sign for Mother/Mummy/Mum/Mama, and has even been teaching some of the children how to sign the chorus of the Spice Girls Song - “Mama”!! 😊

WORLD BOOK DAY 2026 📚

At Our Lady Of Lourdes Preschool we will be celebrating World Book Day by dressing up and enjoying a variety of book related activities.

Thursday the 5th of March is World Book Day, however, at Our Lady Of Lourdes Preschool we will be celebrating all week.

Here is a small selection of the books we looked at yesterday.

SHAPES ~ FOCUS ACTIVITY.

This maths activity encouraged the children to not only use a variety of shapes to create simple models and structures, but it also encouraged the children to recognise, and to use the different type of shapes to create a collage.

But why is it important for children to recognise shapes, and to explore with shapes.

Identifying shapes is essential for a child's development because it builds foundational spatial awareness, enhances early mathematical understanding, and promotes cognitive skills such as sorting and problem-solving.
