🎬 Emerging Young Talent of Somerset

A huge congratulations to Glastonbury-based filmmaker Melissa McCusker, whose original script 'False Premises' has been selected for a 2025 Short Film Commission by Somerset Film in partnership with Watershed Bristol, and supported by BFI Film Academy South West!

Melissa’s film stood out among fierce competition and is now heading into pre-production. She’ll receive:
🎥 A £500 production budget
🎓 Mentoring from an experienced filmmaker
🎬 Access to pro filmmaking equipment

The finished film will premiere this December 2025 at The Engine Room, Somerset Film’s media resource centre in Bridgwater.

This opportunity marks an exciting milestone for Melissa, who is fast emerging as a distinctive new voice in the region’s filmmaking scene, and we can’t wait to see what she creates!

“I have been working on many Film and High-End TV productions as a Locations Marshal, such as Young Sherlock, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, The Other Bennet Sister, and Masters of the Universe, to name a few.

I intend to pursue a career in the Locations department, none of which would have been possible if it weren’t for attending the BFI Film Academy Short Course back in 2022!” - Morgan

We are accepting applications for our next BFI Film Academy short course, apply by 6th October: www.somersetfilm.com/bfi

We always like hearing from our BFI Film Academy Alumni, this is Morgan's story…

"I was lucky enough to be accepted into the BFI Film Academy with Somerset Film in October 2022. I learnt so much from it and met some lovely, like-minded people, some of who I’m still in contact with. This course has helped me grow as an individual and fuelled my passion and motivation further.

Through networking on this course, I had the opportunity to gain work experience as a Location Marshal for a production called ‘Black Cake’ which was being filmed in Wales. It was truly an amazing experience, which solidified for me that I definitely want to work in this industry.

After BFI Film Academy, they signpost you opportunities specifically for BFI Alumni. Through this, I applied for the National Film and Television School (NFTS) Craft Residential in Production Design, which I attended in April 2023. This course helped me discover what areas of the film industry I’m interested in pursuing a career in.

Since then, I have been working on many Film and High-End TV productions as a Locations Marshal such as Young Sherlock, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, The Other Bennet Sister, and Masters of the Universe to name a few.

I intend to pursue a career in the Locations department, none of which would have been possible if it weren’t for attending the BFI Film Academy Short Course back in 2022!

I cannot recommend Somerset Film enough. Laura and Deb have been absolutely fantastic and extremely supportive over the years! "
