The University of Bristol Society of Economic Geologists Student Chapter was founded in 2015 to complement the growing economic geology research group in the School of Earth Sciences. The UoB SEG aims to connect students, academics and industry professionals united by an interest in the geology of ore deposits. Each academic term the UoB SEG hosts a series of events aimed at raising the awareness

Dear all,

Please join us next Friday as Mark Howson delivers “Practical Aspects of Mining Geology”. Mark will also be sharing case studies from his time in the field to demonstrate why mining geologists must always demonstrate good practice - especially when things go wrong!

Find us in G8 from 13:00! Pizza provided as always.

Dear all,

Please join us next Monday as we welcome our AEGIS professor Dr John Thompson for the next instalment of this years lecture series titled “Exploration and Mining - A World of Change”.

John's upcoming talk will look at how developments in geoscience, models and exploration tools over the last century have shaped how we understand and look for mineral deposits.

Find us in G8 from 12:30 next Monday.

There’ll be pizza as always!

Dear all,

Please join us next Wednesday as our chapter welcomes Anne Thompson in the next instalment of this year's lecture series titled “The Bre-X fraud – impact on geoscience in exploration”.

The story of the Busang ‘Gold Deposit’ fraud unravelled exactly 25 years ago. Missing in the hype at the time were key geological observations. Anne will discuss her experience as a consultant working for Bre-X at a time when there were no processes for addressing concerns or reporting discrepancies, and how the events of that day changed the course of procedure in industry forever.

Anne will demonstrate how quality geoscience is critical to investor confidence and a responsible mining industry, and how we can integrate this in our own practises as we venture into industry.

Don’t miss it - find us next Wednesday at 2pm in G7. There will be pizza too!
