Loose parts and heuristic play in home corner this week. Very busy and engaged children- playing, exploring, persevering and experimenting.

Receiving this feedback unexpectedly from a parent today had me more than a little emotional! We know how privileged we are to look after our families' most precious people, to be trusted to be part of their children's formative years and to be not only witness to but also partners in their children's learning and development. Saying goodbye to our families as they leave us for the next stage of their children's education is always such a wrench, and I think sometimes we overlook the close bond we form with the whole family, not just the child- I hate this time of year!

Exploring using chalk and dry brushes today, both in and out side, on a large and then small scale. This was all completely child led, and supported by the accessible, open ended resources in our continuous provision. So many were utilised- from making links between their experiences, testing and reflecting on their ideas and trying out something new.

Our open ended resources have been used really creatively this week to make various vehicles‐ from rubbish trucks to aeroplanes- taking us on many journeys and adventures and facilitating lots of opportunities to talk and share the children's different experiences.

We've enjoyed making hot air balloons this week, inspired by Bristol International Balloon Fiesta- practising our scissor skills as well as threading, sticking and continuing to explore the idea of marks we make carrying meaning.

Our core text recently has been The Three Little Pigs. This has inspired lots of fantastic role play- with lots of language from the book being used brilliantly. The children have also enjoyed making lots of brick houses to keep safe from the wolf, and have thought about what they need to include (for example the magnatiles house includes "a chimney for the wolf to go down.") We read this book as part of a more structured story time every day, but it is also available in book corner for children to self-select and retell independently. We always keep copies of our core texts accessible in book corner long after it's been our featured story as the children always love to revisit these. We also try and include multiple and variations of the same story when it's a traditional tale, and the older children love spotting the differences! If the children aren't gripped by a story then we move on, and equally sometimes a book can pique their interests for prolonged periods of time in which case we go with it and see where the interest takes us.
