Huge congratulations Alexia Williams MBE, who has been awarded an MBE in the June King’s Honours for services to Education and Skills. Alexia studied a degree apprenticeship in Aerospace Engineering, works at Rolls-Royce Bristol and is a passionate advocate for STEM careers and women in tech.
An incredible milestone following her graduation from UWE Bristol in 2022 and her role today as a Technical Lead.
She’s one of five UWE Bristol alumni recognised this year, including newly knighted Aardman co-founders Sir David Sproxton and Sir Peter Lord, as well as MBE recipients Heather Frankham MBE DL and Sandra Gordon. We’re proud to celebrate their achievements and the positive difference they continue to make. More in comments.

Our researchers have developed a new toolkit to help people living with drug and alcohol dependency access community support that can benefit their long-term health and wellbeing.
Working with alcohol and drug charity Via, the team explored how people in recovery can be better supported to connect with local community assets, including peer-supported groups, recovery cafes, faith groups, community centres, and education and employment services.
The research found that passive signposting is often not enough. Instead, people in recovery value warm, human connections that help build confidence, reduce fear and support them at the right stage of their recovery journey.

We’ve added three beautifully detailed and vibrant murals to our new Kingfisher Court accommodation.
The artwork has been designed in response to student surveys and explores themes of nature and wellbeing to help foster a welcoming environment within the lobby and study lounge of the student accommodation.
The murals were created as part of a collaboration between graduate-founded public art producer Art Sync and student-led creative agency New Wave.

A recent study from the University highlights a powerful insight: young children who struggle with reading are far more likely to read for pleasure when the books reflect what they’re already passionate about.
Whether it’s football, TV shows, Lego, or art, interest-led choice was the strongest driver in motivating developing readers. In fact, 7 out of 9 children in the study chose books based on personal passions or familiarity.
The research, led by Leah Dowty, matters because previous studies show that weaker reading skills often lead to lower motivation, creating a cycle that impacts both ability and self-confidence. (More in comments).
