Book launch announcement!

The IGRCT is holding a book launch lecture and reception for the volume "Time, Tense, and Genre in Ancient Greek Literature", edited by our wonderful colleague Dr Connie Bloomfield-Gadêlha and Prof. Edith Hall. The event is open to all, and will consist of a talk by Prof. Nick Lowe (Royal Holloway), followed by a drinks reception.

The volume fuses three concepts and associated approaches to ancient literature that have never been applied together at the same time: ideas of time, grammatical tense, and literary genre, thus providing a significant new approach to ancient Greek literature by throwing fresh light on one of its most important preoccupations.

Did you ever think we need more Euripides in your life? Well good news! The first edition of a new Euripides papyrus fragment has now been published in Zeitschrift für Papyrologie und Epigraphik and the proceedings of the conference held at the Center for Hellenic Studies will be coming out shortly, featuring the work of two of our colleagues, Prof Patrick Finglass and Dr Lyndsay Coo!

The New Euripides - The Center for Hellenic Studies On June 13 and 14, 2024, the Center for Hellenic Studies hosted 15 scholars from across the globe to compare their research on one of the most significant discoveries in Greek tragedy in nearly 60 years.

We are enormously proud of our Chair of Ancient History, Professor Esther Eidinow, who has been elected Fellow to the British Academy. Warm congratulations, Esther! 😍

*Reading Greek Tragedy with Judith Butler* by Professor Mario Telò (UC Berkeley) has just been published in our colleague Laura Jansen's series, Classical Receptions in Twentieth-Century Writing. Huge congratulations to Mario on his important book, which includes an interview with Butler. The book also marks the 10th monograph in this series! 🥳

In the Classical world, women’s bodies were sometimes imagined to be very different from those of men, but could also be seen as similar in their composition even if not quite as good as male bodies. In either case, the materials of the female body were thought to hold special powers. In this talk I shall consider the basic theories put forward in medical writings about the body, and then consider the different ways in which both magic and medicine suggested that women's bodies were powerful. I shall focus on milk and blood as important fluids and shall revisit stories in which even the sight of the naked female body could stop men – or insects! – in their tracks.

Entry is FREE for CA members and university and school students. Non-members will be asked to contribute £5 on the night. Arrival and refreshments from 6:45pm.
