Sleep latency can be a really useful tool when looking at your child's sleep. So what is it?
Sleep latency is the amount of time it takes to fall asleep once the lights go off, so to say.
This refers to the time your little one takes to fall asleep, whether they're doing so independently in their own sleep space or with your support, such as lying next to them, rocking, cuddling, or feeding.
When we fall asleep, we want to drift off to sleep rather than crash into sleep.
Optimal sleep latency is roughly between 10 and 25 minutes.
The idea is that if your little one is regularly crashing into sleep in less than 5 minutes and then waking regularly shortly after, they could have gone to sleep a bit earlier.
Likewise, if your child is really fighting sleep and hasn't fallen asleep after 25 minutes, they may not have been quite tired enough and could have gone down a bit later.
Like anything, this is just a guide. If your child falls asleep really quickly and there are no other issues, then there's no need to change anything.
I often talk to many parents who say getting their child to sleep can take hours, and in this situation, I would first look at sleep latency. Do they need less daytime sleep or maybe a later bedtime? It may be that they just aren't tired enough yet.
It's important to remember that sleep latency is just one aspect of sleep, and focusing solely on it might not solve all sleep-related issues.
Every child is unique, and various factors contribute to their sleep patterns. While sleep latency can provide valuable insights, it's a starting point rather than a comprehensive solution.

"Do hard things at easy times."
😌Whenever you're contemplating a change, whether it's in routines or habits, choosing easy moments can make a significant difference.
🏃♀️This means opting for times when you have more energy, patience, and available time, thus reducing stress.
🛏️For example, if you're considering cot sleep for your little one, trying it during the first nap of the day when both you and your child are well-rested could lead to a smoother transition. If it doesn't go as planned, don't worry; there's still the rest of the day ahead. However, attempting something new like cot sleep in the middle of the night could turn into a disaster.
👨👩👧Similarly, during significant life events, like when your child starts a new care setting, it's best not to make drastic changes to sleep. These are times when they need your support more than ever.
❤️Remember to give yourself permission to choose the easier option when facing challenges. For instance, if your child's sleep has become erratic due to developmental changes, consider going to bed a bit earlier to catch up on sleep. While it may seem mundane, it's only temporary, and prioritising your well-being is crucial.
💤If you want to make some changes but are unsure where to start I can help you with this.
