School closure.
You will be aware that on Friday I put certain measures in place due to the forecasted heat wave and Amber weather warnings for this week. A relaxation of our uniform expectations, reminders about hydration, wearing a hat and drinking plenty of water still remain in place. We are doing everything we can to maintain a reasonable environment within the school with all blinds drawn and limited time outside.
However, a red weather warning has been issued for parts of the South West due to extreme heat on Wednesday and Thursday of this week (week commencing 22nd June 2026 ), which is an anticipated increase from the amber warning that is currently in effect.
Red Alerts indicate possible significant health risks to the wider population. A red warning is the most severe level of alert which indicates dangerous weather is expected with a high likelihood of risk to life.
It could also lead to failures of critical national infrastructure, such as power outages or roads and rail lines being closed. In situations where a red warning is issued, the Met Office advises people to avoid travelling where possible and to follow the advice of the emergency services and local authorities.
Bearing in mind the distances that all our pupils and staff travel to attend Elmfield each day, myself and the Chair of Governors have concluded that the safest option is to close the school on Wednesday and Thursday. This decision was not reached lightly and we are aware that this places additional strain on families. However, it is not safe for students to be sat in cars to and from the building on those days.
Pupils will be sent home with suitable work tomorrow.
I thank you for your understanding. Pupils are expected back in school on Friday 26th June.

Today, the children in Explorers, Builders and Creators classes enjoyed an outside assembly. They had a practice parkrun with Vinnie leading the warm up and then they zoomed round the playground collecting high fives from staff.
Come to Horfield Common junior parkrun on Sunday 3rd May at 9am for a real parkrun.

A fresh look for Elmfield!
2027 sees two significant landmarks for Elmfield School for Deaf Children: the opening of our own stand-alone Secondary School and our 70th anniversary!
To mark this, we have commissioned the creation of 2 new logos for each part of our school: primary and secondary. The designs were created by Deaf Digital Artist Andrew Baillie https://www.linkedin.com/in/andrew-baillie-01b74b47/ and we are thrilled. You will see the new logos appearing across our media over the next few months.
We are also updating our school uniforms, working with Unicorn Workwear, a local Bristol company. https://www.unicornworkwear.net/search/?find=elmfield+jumper More details to follow very soon.
We are delighted with the new logos and are sure you will agree they are fantastic!
