If you said yes to any of these questions, then the Midwives-in-Training Research and Journal Review Club (MITRJRC) could be for you! Feedback from our spring sessions demonstrate the value of the journal club for students.

The MITRJRC is a friendly online club open to all midwives-in-training to encourage professional connection and promote continued education beyond the curriculum. Today is World Sepsis Day, an initiative raising awareness of one of the world’s most urgent health challenges.

Sepsis contributes to a significant proportion of pregnancy- and childbirth-related deaths, with a 10% mortality rate in the UK alone. It is vital to know the signs and intervene rapidly.

Our first session of the Midwives-in-Training Research and Journal Review Club for the new academic year has been announced!

In this installment we are joined by Laura Atherton, Operational Manager at the Milk Bank in Chester and Bereavement Lead on the Memory Milk Gift initiative, and Sara Balmforth, Perinatal Midwife at Forget Me Not Children's Hospice.

Their session 'Transforming Grief into Legacy' will look at the importance of recognising the significance of lactation within bereavement, supporting parental choices and contributing to individualised bereavement care.

The event, which is hosted by Michelle McKay, will involve a presentation, discussion with fellow students, and a Q&A session with Laura and Sara.

The Hot Topic for our September Digest is written by The Motherless Mothers,
a UK charity and peer-support community for women navigating pregnancy, birth and parenthood without the presence of their own mother, due to bereavement, estrangement, illness or another form of maternal absence. It was founded in June 2024 by Adina Belloli and Louise Kirby-Jones.

This week is Rainbow Baby Week, an annual awareness campaign aiming to break the silence surrounding pregnancy after loss, honour lost babies and offer a beacon of hope to expectant parents across the UK. 🌈

Coordinated by pregnancy after loss charity Willow’s Rainbow Box, prominent regional landmarks across England are lighting up tomorrow evening (Wednesday 19th August) in support of the week. The charity is encouraging other councils, businesses, trusts and venues across the country to join the display and light up their own buildings in rainbow colours.

Amneet Graham, Founder of Willow's Rainbow Box, said "the pregnancy after loss journey can be incredibly isolating and full of mixed emotions. As these landmarks join us to highlight pregnancy after loss and Rainbow Baby Week, we hope it reminds families they will never be alone in this".

The public are invited to view the light-ups in their local cities tomorrow evening and share their pictures using the hashtag to help spread hope to everyone in need. 🤍
