🥋 Commonwealth medallist Lele Nairne has been inspiring pupils at Redmaids' High School GDST in Bristol.

Fresh from winning bronze for Team England at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games this summer, the British judo champion spoke to junior pupils about her journey from starting judo aged eight to competing at the Olympic and Commonwealth Games.

Lele, who is also Redmaids’ High’s lead judo coach, encouraged the girls to believe in themselves, embrace challenges and keep going when things don’t go to plan.

❤️ Bristol schools are being invited to join a UK-wide lifesaving initiative this October.

Restart a Heart Live 2026 takes place across the country on Thursday 1 October, with free interactive sessions teaching children and young people CPR and defibrillator awareness.

Schools in Bristol can join thousands of others across the UK taking part in the campaign to ‘Fill Our Schools with Lifesavers’.

No specialist equipment is needed either – pupils can practise along using a cushion, folded jacket or even a teddy bear.

More than 40,000 people suffer an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in the UK each year, so knowing what to do in those first crucial minutes can make an enormous difference.

🐰 A wonderfully bonkers family adventure is coming to Bristol this half term!

Rabbit & Rey and The Lost Things arrives at The Wardrobe Theatre from 27-29 October, bringing together puppetry, visual storytelling, plenty of laughs and a heart-warming adventure about all the things we manage to lose.

Created by Stuff and Nonsense Theatre Company, the show is ideal for children aged 3+ and their families, with performances at 11am and 2pm each day.

👏 Congratulations to everyone at Northleaze CofE Primary School, which is celebrating a positive Ofsted report following its recent inspection.

Inspectors praised the school’s “enthusiastic learners”, strong achievement, positive behaviour and the “keen sense of belonging” felt by pupils.

Headteacher Corinne Clarke said the report reflects the “caring and ambitious community” being built at Northleaze.

🎬 Bristol student hits the big screen alongside Saoirse Ronan!

City Academy Year 9 student Lakhan Konsal has landed a role in the newly released feature film Bad Apples, appearing alongside four-time Oscar nominee Saoirse Ronan.

And it’s the latest addition to a growing CV which already includes the BBC’s The Beaker Girls, work with the FA and performing in London’s West End.

🏆 Congratulations to Ashton Park School (Official) in South Bristol, which has received the Bronze Anti-Racist School Award.

The award recognises two years of work involving students and staff across the curriculum, school culture, student voice and links with local families and communities.

Assessors particularly highlighted the school's weekly Equalities Group, its work as a School of Sanctuary and efforts to make the curriculum more representative of different cultures, identities and histories.

❄️ Are today’s young people really a ‘snowflake generation’?

The head of an independent review into mental health, ADHD and autism says absolutely not – and argues that it is genuinely harder to be young today.

Prof Peter Fonagy says there has been a real rise in mental distress among children and young people, including anxiety, depression, self-harm and eating disorders, with economic uncertainty, employment worries and social media all adding to the pressures they face.

His message to those who dismiss young people as ‘snowflakes’?

“Just try living 24 hours as a 16-year-old.”

📚 Two days of stories, creativity and family fun are coming to Bristol!

Storytale Festival returns to We The Curious on 24 and 25 October with a packed programme for children, teenagers and families.

Expect storytelling, crafts, wildlife adventures, poetry, world-building and workshops with authors and illustrators including Laura Henry-Allain MBE, Yasmeen Ismail, Sam Hume, Gita Ralleigh and many more.

Started by a group of Bristol mums in 2019, the non-profit festival is also working with ten Bristol schools this year to bring authors directly into classrooms.
