I am excited to be invited to speak at the mBIT (multiple Brain Integration techniques if you aren’t familiar with it 😊) conference tomorrow 🎉
If you haven’t heard of mBIT before, it is a variety of techniques used in a coaching format to connect to and align our three intelligences; our head, heart and gut 🧠 ❤️ 🔮
It is used on its own or combined with other modalities to support us in many ways. For example if you want to make a breakthrough, change a habit, or have patterns that keep us from flourishing that you want to shift. It also helps us to build self awareness and experience more ease and aligned flow in our life.
I’m looking forward to speak about how unresolved trauma, which may be hidden, can shape and impact our bodies and lives.
I’m also going to speak about my favourite subject; exploring the ways we can integrate a trauma-informed approach into our practice.
So much of being trauma-informed is built on providing a safe environment for our clients. Not just physically, but also physiologically, relationally, psychologically, and culturally. Our bodies perception of felt sense safety is key.
If you’re an mBIT coach I’m looking forward to seeing you there!
If you’d like to find out more about mBIT, I know some fabulous trainers- get in touch! 🙌🏼

Using a Trauma-Informed approach in our coaching means we recognise that our client may have been impacted by trauma at some time in their life.
We consider if that could be what is stopping them from achieving their goal.
We have an understanding of how to respond and how we can use our coaching skills appropriately to help them achieve their goals in a safe and supportive way.
We know what to do if our client does become triggered whilst we are coaching, so that they don't leave the session negatively impacted by the
experience.
And we have clarity around our scope of practice and know when to refer.

You may have noticed I have been quieter recently! I have had the pleasure of delivering CPD on a variety of topics to staff within the NHS, and other statutory health and social care agencies as well as VCSE.
This month I was excited and honoured to be asked to facilitate a training for clinical leads within the NHS on integrating a Trauma Informed Care approach into Women’s Health Care services.
Whilst it was a different audience for me to deliver trauma-informed training to, the message is the same.
In recognising that many people will have faced adverse or traumatic experiences throughout their life course, what do we need to be aware of and understand in order to reduce re-traumatisation and create a safe space for them while accessing the service?
We also reflected on the ways each individual in the organisation embodies and models a trauma-informed approach.
This particular theme ran throughout the training as it is something that comes up a lot.
‘’What difference can I make as one person in a larger system’’?
This quote by the Dalai Lama is a good reminder to us!
‘’If you think you are too small to make a difference, try sleeping with a mosquito.’’
What difference are you making for the person in front of you?
And how does embodying the trauma-informed principles into our work enhance that further?

For me, this quote from Peter Levine highlights the importance of us as coaches and practitioners using a trauma-informed approach in our work.
“Trauma is not what happens to us, but what we hold inside in the absence of an empathetic witness.” Peter Levine
It lends itself to the 4th ‘R’ in the ‘4 R’ model of being trauma-informed; avoid retraumatising our clients.
As trauma-informed coaches we are aware of the ways we may inadvertently re-play a previous trauma biography for our clients by not witnessing them in their experience.
We understand the factors often in play that can increase the chances of someone experiencing something as overwhelming to the point it leads on to having a detrimental impact on them later in life.
The absence of an empathetic witness is often one of those factors that are part of a trauma. In that moment, we are alone with what happened, with our emotions and body responses, with nowhere to process it. We couldn’t make sense of it and didn’t release the energy present. Instead it becomes stuck within our body leading to dysregulation. This is often what happens when we have micro traumas in our early life and can form the basis of limiting beliefs in the future.
It may be our client is an absent, empathetic witness to Self. Instead cajoling themselves to ‘get on with it’, not allowing themselves to feel their feelings, and shaming themselves through a survival part.
Another aspect of being trauma-informed is being aware of how that past ‘there and then’ experience may be playing out in the here and now. And how we notice that as a coach.
So, what has been held inside of our client since that experience? In terms of thoughts, the meaning they made of something, the beliefs that were formed? Do we check in with how it feels and what emotions or body sensations come up for them?
Then there are our own responses too. Where did our head jump to when this came up? How did our body react or respond? How present were we to all of this? Was a disclosure being made and we knew how to respond to it?
In the session, what played out between us and the client? Did we mirror the client’s previous experience of this event with our response? Did we notice and reflect on our client's go-to response or pattern as it played out? Did a strong achiever or perfectionist pattern show up? The harsh internal critic? Or procrastination or shut down?
All of this and more is something we delve into in the accredited CPD workshop for coaches on Becoming Trauma-Informed.
