Baffling school reports and test results ...
"I was speaking with my sister-in-law about my niece's school report the other day. There were assessment results, with scaled-scores and an outcome of 'Not met the expected standard' in one area. No further explanation, no descriptor of the assessment, what it means, how far off an expected standard she is. Once I had explained the scaled score and drawn it all out, they were much relieved - and had a few pointers to go back into school and have a useful conversation with the teacher; but initially, my brother and sister in law were baffled and worried" - Alastair, Spotlight Director.

At Spotlight, we provide explanation, reassurance and practical next steps to support parents and their children's academic progress.

Are Tests Bad? 15/05/2023

Once again, the debate surrounding SATs has intensified. Do these tests, originally designed as an internal measure, continue to fulfil their purpose? Are they genuinely effective in evaluating abilities, skills, or knowledge? SATs have transformed into high-stakes, high-pressure exams that impose excessive stress on children and frequently lead to long-lasting negative effects on their educational journey. At Spotlight, we prioritise assessment over tests. We're advocates of low-stakes, low-pressure assessment that provides valuable data and insights into your child's learning.

Speaking to your child's school 02/05/2023

Many parents simply wish to support their child’s school and teachers, wanting to work with them to ensure that their child is getting the best education possible. Spotlight consultants can advise you how best to approach the school in a non-confrontational manner, ensuring that your child is placed at the heart of all decision making. Spotlight data can be used to close gaps between parental expectations/aspirations and the views of the school, especially relevant when approaching national examinations and target setting.

Spotlight is more than an assessment as it comes with a 30-minute discussion with an education expert.

Spotlight is working with a number of former headteachers and senior leaders who recognise the needs of parents in accessing impartial, professional advice. This conversation is for you; to address your concerns and thoughts, and the agenda is entirely set by YOU. Our consultants will help explain the results of the assessment in the context of your child's needs, and suggest a range of options to help you navigate the next part of the journey, presented to you as a Next Steps document.
