English spelling is the wild west of linguistics! π€
Here are some delightfully odd examples that often trip people up - or just make us scratch our heads:
π Words with Silent Letters
- Psychology β That βpβ at the front? Silent as a ninja. π₯·
- Knife β What did the βkβ ever do to deserve such silence?
- Subtle β The βbβ is being sneakyβ¦appropriately. π
π Weird Letter Combinations
- Colonel β Pronounced kernel. Somehow ended up with a French spelling and a British pronunciation.
π¨π΅π¬π§
- Bologna β Looks like βbo-LO-nya,β but it's baloney in speech. Yep.πΆβπ«οΈ
- Wednesday β βWED-nes-dayβ? Most people just pretend the βdβ isnβt there.π€·
π‘ Vowel Madness
- Through / Though / Thought / Thorough β All similar-looking, all completely different sounds.
- Queue β A whole bunch of letters just to say βQ.β
- Business β Should be busyness, but somewhere along the way, it got fancy.
π Spelling That Doesnβt Match Sound
- Island β The βsβ is leftover from a mistaken connection with Latin insula.
- Debt β That βbβ was added in Middle English to mimic the Latin word debitum.
English is full of these little linguistic quirks. Part historical accident, part patchwork evolution. π€

π© Happy Mad Hatter Day! π°β β Letβs Celebrate in English!
Hey, English learners! π
Today is Mad Hatter Day (October 6th), a quirky celebration inspired by the *Mad Hatter*, the iconic character from Lewis Carrollβs Alice in Wonderland. This wacky day is all about embracing silliness, creativity, and a little bit of madnessβjust like the Mad Hatter himself! ππ
π A Little History
The Mad Hatter is famous for his top hat, which has a tag that says 10/6. This refers to the size of the hat (10 shillings and 6 pence), but fans of the book decided to turn it into a date (October 6th) for a fun holiday! The day was first celebrated in the USA in 1986 by a group of computer geeks who wanted to embrace the light-hearted madness of the character. Now, itβs an excuse to have fun and get a little βmadβ (in a good way)!
π How to Celebrate Mad Hatter Day in English!
Here are some fun, ESL-friendly ways to get into the Mad Hatter spirit:
1. Throw a Tea Party! π«
Just like the Mad Hatterβs famous tea party, invite friends for an afternoon tea! Practice your English by using phrases like βWould you like some tea?β or βPass the sugar, please!β You can also wear fun hats or dress up in crazy outfits for extra fun.
2. Play Word Games π§©
Celebrate by playing English word games like Scrabble, Wordle, or even Mad Libs! You can make the games as silly as you likeβjust like the Mad Hatter would. Bonus: It helps you improve your vocabulary!
3. Speak in Riddles β
The Mad Hatter loves riddles! Try making up your own riddles in English, or share some classic ones like, βWhat has keys but can't open locks? (Answer: A piano!)β It's a fun way to challenge your brain and practice thinking in English.
4. Watch Alice in Wonderland π₯
Watching this classic movie in English (with subtitles if needed) is a great way to celebrate. Pay attention to how the characters use different expressions, especially the Mad Hatter's quirky lines!
5. Write Your Own Wonderland Story βοΈ
Get creative! Write a short story about what would happen if you went to Wonderland. Use new vocabulary words youβve learned in your ESL lessons. The crazier, the better!
π€ͺ Mad Hatter Phrases to
- βWe're all mad here!β β Meaning: Everyone is a little crazy sometimes. π
- "Why is a raven like a writing desk?" β Itβs a famous riddle without a real answer!
- "Have I gone mad?β β Meaning: βAm I acting strange or unusual?β
π° **Bonus Tip**: Donβt forget the cakes and cookies! Celebrating with sweets will make your Mad Hatter Day even more delicious! πͺ
So, put on your craziest hat, grab a cup of tea, and letβs embrace the madness together in English! π¬π

A fun acrostic poem. A poem where each line starts with the letter of a word is called an acrostic poem. In an acrostic, the first letters of each line spell out a word or phrase, often vertically.
Here's a fun acrostic poem for "Barbara":
Bright as the morning, full of cheer,
Always spreading kindness far and near.
Running through life with grace and might,
Bringing joy like sunshine's light.
Adventurous spirit, bold and free,
Radiant smile, like the endless sea.
Always a spark, for all to see!

π Happy Paperback Book Day! π
Today, we celebrate the joy and convenience of paperback books! Introduced in the early 20th century, paperbacks revolutionised the publishing industry by making literature more accessible and affordable. This format became particularly popular during the 1930s and 1940s, offering readers a portable and economical way to enjoy a wide range of genres. Paperback Book Day, observed on July 30th, is a tribute to these beloved companions that have brought stories and knowledge to so many.
Ways to Celebrate:
1. Revisit a Classic: Pick up a beloved classic in paperback form and lose yourself in a timeless story.
2. Discover New Authors: Visit your local bookstore or library and explore the paperback section for new authors and genres.
3. Gift a Paperback: Share the love of reading by gifting a favourite paperback to a friend or family member.
4. Create a Cozy Reading Nook: Set up a comfortable space in your home dedicated to reading and relaxing.
5. Join a Book Club: Connect with others by joining or starting a book club to discuss your favourite paperbacks.
In the words of Mason Cooley, "Reading gives us someplace to go when we have to stay where we are."
Paperbacks have always been a gateway to adventure, knowledge, and imagination, making them perfect companions wherever you are.
Celebrate Paperback Book Day by diving into a good book, and enjoy the simple pleasure of turning the pages of a paperback. Happy reading! πβ¨

Making Predictions:
When we make predictions, we guess what might happen next in a story. This helps us understand the story better and makes reading more fun! We use clues from the story and what we already know to make our guesses.
Practice Exercise
Step 1: Read a Story
First, read a short story. It can be about anything you like, such as animals, adventures, or fairy tales.
Step 2: Think About What Might Happen Next
After reading a part of the story, pause and think about what might happen next. Look for clues in the story and use your imagination!
Step 3: Practice Speaking Your Predictions
Now, practice speaking your predictions. Here are some sentence starters to help you:
1. "I think that..."
2. "Maybe the character will..."
3. "I predict that..."
4. "Next, they might..."
Example
Story: The Lost Puppy
There was a small puppy named Max who loved to explore. One day, Max wandered too far from home and got lost in the woods. He was scared and didnβt know how to find his way back.
*Pause Here*
Making Predictions:
- "I think Max will meet a friendly animal in the woods."
- "Maybe the puppy will find a path that leads back to his home."
- "I predict that someone will come looking for Max."
- "Next, Max might hear a familiar sound and follow it."
Now Practice with Your Story
Step 1: Read a Part of Your Story
Choose a short part of your story to read.
Step 2: Make Predictions
Use the sentence starters to make predictions about what might happen next.
Step 3: Speak Your Predictions
Practice saying your predictions out loud. You can say:
- "I think that..."
- "Maybe the character will..."
- "I predict that..."
- "Next, they might..."
Example Practice
Let's say you read a story about a girl named Lily who finds a mysterious map.
- "I think that Lily will follow the map to find a hidden treasure."
- "Maybe Lily will ask her friends to help her."
- "I predict that the map will lead them to an adventure."
- "Next, they might face some challenges along the way."
Keep practising with different parts of the story, and soon you'll be great at making predictions!
