The New York Times’s editorial position on U.S. withdrawal was as consequential. As the Taliban entered Kabul, its editorial board declared that “the Biden administration was right to bring the war to a close.” On the last day of the United Nations-endorsed U.S. mission in Afghanistan, on August 30, 2021, the New York Times described it as “ending a two-decade occupation.” The newspaper was not merely arguing retrospectively that the war had failed; it was endorsing the decision to end it at the very moment of the Taliban’s victory. The newspaper’s current Afghanistan coverage is even more revealing because Thomas Gibbons-Neff, a former New York Times correspondent, was a U.S. Marine who served two tours in Afghanistan.
