We help people getting engaged with conservation and community development work around the world through volunteering. WorkingAbroad Projects is a not-for-profit company, established in March 2002, in order to provide small scale organisations with need-based support from volunteers. The main areas of focus are: wildlife and habitat conservation, environmental education and management, permaculture and organic agriculture and cultural development. We run projects in various countries around the world.

"Not Just a Family Holiday"

A Sri Lankan wildlife adventure where families learn, explore and contribute to real conservation.

What if your next family holiday could bring you face to face with wild elephants, immerse you in Sri Lankan village life, introduce your children to real conservation work, and leave your whole family seeing the natural world differently? A rare opportunity for parents and children to step beyond the ordinary tourist experience and become part of genuine wildlife conservation and community outreach.

This summer, so many families joined us at Wasgamuwa - here's some of what they told us.

"We've been home from Sri Lanka a few days and just wanted to say thank you to the whole team for the fabulous experience our family had. It was everything we'd hoped for and more - our boys' eyes have been opened up to another way of life, and they've already been asking where next.

Chandima is such a kind and knowledgeable man and made our week truly special - his generosity in sharing his knowledge seemed limitless. Devani is a fantastic asset to the team too, as is everyone we met through the week. Our boys absolutely loved Siriya - his positivity stayed with our whole family, and 'what would Siriya do?' became part of our family vocabulary for the rest of our travels. The answer was always to smile and keep going.

For anyone hesitating - just go for it, it's more than worth it. This won't be the last you hear from the Molloys."

Our Teens Marine Conservation volunteers have just returned from the Maldives after 2 weeks with some wonderful feedback!

Here’s snippets from 3 parents about their teens experiences and impressions:

My son had the most wonderful time on the Maldives trip and as it was his first solo travel experience, he was really proud of himself too.

The whole application and booking experience was great and you keeping in touch with us was really good too.

Having the parent group chat and a separate teen group chat worked really well, us parents were in touch a lot and it helped with flight booking and other organising. And the video call before they left was great too.

Despite getting quite badly sunburnt (his own fault for not wearing his rash vest!) Max loved all the activities they did out there, volunteering at the Marine centre, snorkeling, diving, volleyball, crab hunting, fire on the beach, karaoke, school visit etc. He said they were great.

Grace and the other staff working with them were all amazing too and were always on hand to help them, give them advice etc

He gives the trip 10/10 and said it was the best holiday he’s ever been on!

Just wanted to say thank you very much for giving Poppy such a fabulous trip. She absolutely loved it. It was a far better experience than with the alternative company that she did a similar trip with last year. Thank you very much for being so human and caring towards the young people involved. Your communication and approach was really excellent and I’m very grateful.

My son is 15 next year, and I think quite interested in following in Poppy‘s footsteps, perhaps on the same Maldives trip, so you may be hearing for us again soon!

Anna had the best trip to the Maldives. She thoroughly enjoyed all the activities throughout her time in Naifaru and felt there was a good mix of marine conservation and also learning about the local culture.

The information provided by Working Abroad in the lead up to the trip was excellent and the updates from Grace during the trip were great, it was so nice to hear what they had been up to each day.

This was Annas first solo trip and I always felt confident that she was being well looked after and safe whilst she was away. It has been a wonderful experience for her!

This was our second time booking with Working Abroad, after taking part in the family volunteering in Kefalonia last year, and I'm sure it won't be our last! Anna is already planning next year's trip!!

The first nest of the season has hatched at our Statia Conservation Volunteer Project, St. Eustatius, Caribbean! 🐢

Our first hatched nest of the season was confirmed to be a hawksbill turtle nest, achieving an impressive 86.3% hatching success. During the nest excavation, we counted 63 empty eggshells, which is evidence that many baby turtles successfully made their way to the sea. We also found 6 live hatchlings, 4 dead hatchlings and 7 unhatched eggs. The hatchlings found alive were safely released to begin their journey to the open ocean. 🌊

The story behind this nest makes the success even more special. Earlier this season, our sea turtle team discovered the nest being washed away by waves on Zeelandia Beach. To give the remaining eggs the best chance of survival, we carefully relocated a total of 73 eggs to a safer location.💙

Nest relocations are only carried out when a nest is at risk from, for example, erosion or flooding. Because sea turtle embryos are extremely sensitive, every egg must be carefully moved and reburied in a new nest chamber that closely mimics the original.
This nest is a wonderful example of how conservation efforts can have a direct impact. Without intervention, this nest would likely have been lost to the waves. Every nest protected is another step towards securing a future for Statia's sea turtles. 🤩

International Primate Day! 🐒

Social, capable and often relatable, primates are a large and diverse category of species and include lemurs, lorises, tarsiers, monkeys, apes, and, of course, humans. The diversity in the species group is shown by size, with lemurs, like the mouse lemur, weighing as little as 30g and gorillas, like the eastern gorilla, reaching up to 200kg.🐵

With such a broad range of species falling into this category, including ourselves, it's only natural that we have lots of projects that work with these amazing creatures. These glorious images come from our projects across Costa Rica, Peru, Laos, Namibia and Ecuador.🤩

"Saying goodbye was harder than I thought it would be. My time volunteering at Playa Tortuga has given me so many memories that I know I will never forget.

One of the most special parts was getting to release baby turtles and watch them make their way into the ocean. Being able to see the eggs being laid and then later helping give them a chance to reach the sea was such an amazing experience.

I also loved getting to see the bats, mark trees, and learn more about the incredible nature and wildlife around Playa Tortuga. Even going on that one morning walk at 4:00 in the morning is something I will always remember!

Thank you, Playa Tortuga, for all the experiences, adventures, and memories. I came here to volunteer, but I am leaving with so much more than I expected. I will miss this place, the wildlife, and all the special moments I got to experience here.

Goodbye, Playa Tortuga. I hope I can come back someday."
