1. Choose a plain background, such as a wall or door, and take your photo with your head in the middle of the picture.
2. Position the camera around 1 metre (3ft) away from you.
3. Maintain a neutral expression with your lips closed.
4. Look directly into the camera.
5. Do not wear glasses; nothing should be covering your eyes or casting shadows over your face.
6. Make sure your hair is not covering part of your face.
7. Do not wear a hat, head scarf or sunglasses (even if they’re pushed back on top of your head!)
8. Nothing else should be included in the picture; it’s you and only you.
9. Avoid flash reflection on skin or glasses and prevent red-eye.
10. Avoid shadows across the face and behind your head; light should flow from the front to help avoid this.
11. Make sure the light across your face is even.
