What's really driving the UK's nuclear strategy?
At this year's Andrew Webster lecture on science, technology and society at the institute for safe autonomy. Professor Andrew Stirling will present a compelling analysis of how nuclear policy is shaped — not just by energy needs, but by deeper institutional and political forces. Using key approaches from science and technology studies, this talk sheds light on how public narratives and expert perspectives are influenced — and why this matters beyond energy policy alone.

Who gets access to land in the UK still depends heavily on inheritance, wealth, and knowing the right people.
That means many talented and committed people, especially women, face major barriers to starting a career in farming.
A new documentary, The Land that Holds Us, led by Dr Rachael Durrant, Senior Research Fellow at the University of Sussex Business School, explores this issue through the experiences of four women farmers in Sussex and mid-Wales.
The film is part of the Women Back to the Land project, a long-term research study that has followed their journeys into farming since 2021, using interviews, observations, photography, film, and workshops.
The research and documentary reveal that:
• There is often no clear route into farming. Many women get started through volunteering, activism, and unpaid work.
• Women’s contributions are frequently overlooked, with much of their time spent on administration, coordination, and care.
• Access to land is often insecure, with short-term arrangements and significant financial uncertainty.
The women’s own words capture these realities:
“I didn’t know it was a thing you could do.”
“We don’t have long-term security… I’m earning less than minimum wage.”
“I’m not the grower that I set out to be.”
Yet the film also shows how meaningful sustainable farming can be. One participant described working with the land as “life-changing” and said it brought “a sense of peace.”
By combining documentary storytelling with long-term research, Women Back to the Land shows that unequal access to land is not just a gender issue. It has major implications for the future of food production, rural livelihoods, and environmental sustainability.
