“Brainspotting is based on the profound attunement of the therapist with the patient, finding a somatic cue and extinguishing it by down-regulating the amygdala. It isn’t just PNS (Parasympathetic Nervous System) activation that is facilitated, it is homeostasis.” – Robert Scaer, MD, “The Trauma Spectrum”

👁️ THE POWER OF YOUR EYES

What if healing isn’t always about finding the right words?

Sometimes, the body and brain hold experiences that can be difficult to explain. Feelings, memories and responses can exist beneath conscious awareness, even when we can’t quite put them into words.

This is where Brainspotting takes a different approach. 🧠

It’s not just what you think. It’s where you look.

Brainspotting uses your visual field and eye position as part of the therapeutic process, helping you gently focus on what is happening internally and explore experiences that may be difficult to access through talking alone.

👁️ Your eyes can be a powerful window into your internal world.

By finding a meaningful eye position and staying with what arises, Brainspotting aims to support deeper processing and awareness — working with the brain and body rather than simply talking about what happened.

✨ Transformation can go deeper when we work at the source, not just the symptoms.

Brainspotting is a gentle, focused approach that may help people move towards greater clarity, resilience and a sense of freedom from experiences that have continued to affect them.

And you don’t have to have all the answers before you begin.

Sometimes, you simply need the right space to pause, look closer and understand deeper.

💙 Your eyes hold the key. Your brain does the healing.

Swipe through to discover more about the power of your eyes and the Brainspotting approach.

🎥 Video footage taken from a previous Introduction to Brainspotting, where Dr Mark Grixti is talking about the role of vision, eye positions, resources and music within Brainspotting. 🧠👁️

As Brainspotting has developed, there are many different ways of locating relevant eye positions within the field of vision.

Mark discusses how Brainspotting can be adapted when working with clients in different situations, including children, and how it can be integrated into play work and story work. ✨

He also explores the importance of working within the client’s window of tolerance, using resource based approaches that can feel gentler and less activating, while still allowing space for deeper therapeutic processing. 🌿

👁️ So why is vision important?

Our visual system provides an important access point into the brain and body. Mark explores how eye positions can be used within Brainspotting to support the therapeutic process and how this approach can also be adapted for people with impaired vision or who are completely unsighted.

🎶 So why is music important?

Music, rhythm and beats can offer another important layer within the Brainspotting process. Mark discusses how music can help us access deeper parts of our experience and connect with our internal rhythms and sensations. 🎵🧠

Brainspotting is a flexible, resource led approach that continues to develop through clinical experience and understanding. 🧠✨

✨ Our next FREE Introduction to Brainspotting is being held on Monday 14th September, 6:00–7:30pm.

🎥 This video is taken from Tag Studio NY’s “What is Brainspotting?”, where Dr David Grand explains what a Brainspot is and how Brainspotting works.

🧠 So, what exactly is a Brainspot?

A Brainspot is a point in your field of vision that is connected to the way your brain and body are holding an experience.

In this clip, Dr David Grand, the founder of Brainspotting, explains how where we look can be connected to where an experience is being held in the brain.

Brainspotting is based on the connection between our visual field, brain and body. By identifying a particular point in the visual field and gently focusing our attention there, we can begin to access experiences that may not always be easy to put into words.

Rather than needing to explain or analyse everything, Brainspotting creates space to notice what is happening internally and allows the brain and body to process experiences in their own way.

✨ “Where you look affects how you feel.”

This is just a short clip from the full conversation with Dr David Grand, where he explores Brainspotting in more detail and explains the significance of Brainspots within the therapeutic process.

✨ Our early experiences can shape the way our nervous system responds to connection, safety and relationships - but these patterns don’t have to define us forever.

This is where Brainspotting comes in.

Brainspotting is a focused, body-based therapy approach that uses a person’s field of vision to help identify and process experiences that may be held beyond conscious awareness. It is based on the idea that where we look can influence how we access and process emotional and physiological experiences.

Rather than relying solely on talking through what happened, Brainspotting can help bring attention to the felt experience in the body and create space for deeper processing. 🧘‍♀️

For practitioners, this can offer another way of working with clients who may struggle to put their experiences into words - particularly when the nervous system is responding to patterns learned much earlier in life. 🫀

Brainspotting is not about labelling someone or deciding what their attachment style means. It is about creating a safe, supportive environment where the brain and body can process experiences and potentially develop new responses.

Because true healing is not about coping better it is about becoming different at the root. 🪾

✨ How we attend to something affects what comes into manifestation. 🙌

🧠 Some parts of the brain are constantly trying to make sense of our experiences. They pull things out of the flow so they can analyse, categorise, judge and label them — creating a sense of order and safety.

But when we become caught in this mode, we can lose connection with the deeper experience happening within us — the sensations, emotions and messages held within the body.

Brainspotting creates space to turn our attention inward and connect with what is happening beneath the surface. Through presence and focused attention, the nervous system can begin to process and reorganise naturally. 🧘‍♂️
